SCOTT Parker has described his appointment as Newcastle United captain as "the biggest honour of my career."
Glenn Roeder has opted for the wholehearted central midfielder to take over the skipper's armband from the retired Alan Shearer, while goalkeeper Shay Given will be vice-captain.
Parker told nufc.co.uk: "Being asked to become the new captain of Newcastle United is without doubt the greatest honour of my career.
"It's an absolute privilege to take over the skipper's armband from Alan Shearer and lead out the side. Alan was a fantastic servant for the club and I am thrilled to follow in his footsteps.
"As the manager said, there were outstanding candidates for the job in the dressing room and I am honoured that he has chosen me for the position.
"But it's also great to have the support of Shay Given as a vice-captain and the rest of the lads in the dressing room.
"I had a few games as captain last season and really enjoyed them. After missing the end of last season with illness I was already looking forward to the new term and getting back out on the pitch anyway, but to be doing so as captain is brilliant."
