Liam Miller (born February 13, 1981 in Cork) is an Irish association football player whose favoured position is central midfield though he can also play on the right wing.
He formerly played with Celtic where he scored in the UEFA Champions League. He signed for Manchester United for free on July 1, 2004. After signing a pre-contract agreement in January 2004, although he had been in negotiations with Celtic to extend his stay there but these negotiations fell through in November 2003.
He scored his first goal for Manchester United on October 26, 2004 against Crewe Alexandra. However, after an initial fairly promising start for the Red Devils, he found first-team opportunities rare towards the end of the 2004-05 season. On November 4, 2005 he was loaned to Leeds United initially for three months, later extended to the end of the 2005-06 season.
Though his Manchester United career appears to be uncertain, he remains a regular in the Irish squad. On March 1, 2006 he scored his first goal for Ireland in an international friendly against Sweden in Dublin, Picking the ball up on the half way line Miller raced towards the Swedish penalty area letting loose a fine shot from 25 Yards which defeated the Swedish keeper and dipped into the net.
In July 2006 it was reported that Liam Miller will be allowed to leave Manchester United once the Red Devils receive a suitable offer. Big things were expected of Miller when he moved south from Celtic in the summer of 2004, having signed a pre-contract agreement six months earlier. However, virtually from the moment he set foot in Old Trafford, the Republic of Ireland midfielder appeared overawed by his surroundings. In two years at United, Miller has managed just 22 first-team appearances and despite the huge number of senior players missing, he was still only a substitute in the opening game of the Red Devils' current tour of South Africa yesterday. The 25-year-old spent the latter half of last season on loan at Leeds, as the Yorkshire outfit's run to the Championship play-off final. Leeds failure to overcome Watford at the Millennium Stadium scuppered any chance of Miller making a permanent move to Elland Road. But Sir Alex Ferguson has accepted it would be better for all parties if Miller did move on and hopes a deal can be sorted out prior to the August transfer deadline.
