Sir Alex Ferguson felt Wayne Rooney's red card against Porto was 'ridiculous', but had no qualms with Paul Scholes' dismissal.
Rooney and Scholes were both sent off as Manchester United started the Amsterdam Tournament with a spirited 3-1 victory over Porto.
Both players had earlier scored, with Rooney's dismissal coming after the striker had unintentionally caught Pepe in the face with his hand.
Following on from his sending off against Portugal in the World Cup, Rooney could now be suspended for the start of the new Premiership season.
Scholes could also miss out, with Ferguson waiting to learn of any future punishments, although he was far from happy with Rooney's red card.
"I think with the Wayne situation, I think you have to talk about players diving and acting so much that is becoming a norm and you almost accept it," Ferguson told Sky Sports 2.
"But you can't do that, football has to be bigger than that. The boy has made a real meal of it, he makes it difficult for the referee and he should have done better the referee.
"One minute before, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is elbowed and he gave a foul and warned the player.
"I don't see the difference between that and Wayne. I've seen the incident and it's innocuous, it's innocuous," emphasised Ferguson.
"As far as Scholes is concerned, he should know better. To give a red card is harsh, but nonetheless, it was a tackle from the back and you can't argue with that. I have to say once again, the guy is rolling about, dying, and then on his feet immediately."
Regarding possible suspensions for the duo, Ferguson is hoping that common sense is applied in the case of Rooney.
He added: "I think, as far as I know, the Dutch referee can report it to the Dutch FA and then they can report it to The FA and it's in their hands after that.
"You think common sense will prevail, and fairness. It was certainly a ridiculous decision, but we will just have to wait and see."
Rio Ferdinand missed the game after hurting his ankle in the warm-up, while his replacement John O'Shea limped off with a dead leg.
Ferguson delivered a bulletin on the defensive duo and does not feel the players will be out for longer than a week.
He added: "John O'Shea's just a dead leg. Rio went over on his ankle during the warm-up, which was a bit of a blow.
"Hopefully, he should be ready next week. I don't think it's serious, but there is a bit of swelling around the bottom of the ankle and you can't take chances after the experience of last year."
