Macca sees future without Becks
Steve McClaren has admitted he had told David Beckham that he "wanted to go in a different direction" after axing him from the England squad.

Beckham who gave up the England captaincy following the team's miserable World Cup performance has been left out of the squad for next week's friendly against Greece at Old Trafford and now seems to be out in the cold.

However McClaren has left the door open for a return.

He told Sky Sports News: "I spoke with David last Monday and notified him of my decision and said I was planning for the future, to change things and go in a different direction, and that David wasn't included in that.

"I have great respect for David, he was a fantastic captain, a great player and still is. He took the news well. He was disappointed but I got the reaction I wanted. That was for him to continue to fight for a place.

"I will never close the door. That was the end of the conversation (with Beckham)."

McClaren then spelled out how he sees the England team progressing under his command.

"At this present moment I am looking to take this team in a different direction. That is why I decided not to pick David Beckham.

"I want to make this team successful, to qualify for a tournament and to do well. I want to produce an England team that wins matches and plays in a certain style.

"I want to build a team the fans can be proud of. They deserve a winning team."

Beckham has wished his successor John Terry the best of luck. The Real Madrid star said in a statement released to PA Sport: "Having spoken to Steve McClaren this week I can fully understand that a new manager should want to make his mark on the team and build towards the next World Cup.

"I'm proud have played for England for 10 years and my passion for representing my country remains as strong as ever. I'd like to wish the best of luck to John Terry and will offer him my complete support in the future."

McClaren, having been Eriksson's right hand man, was asked if he had dropped Beckham to make a statement and, bristling, he replied: "I am not making a statement. It is what I believe in.

"David Beckham is a player I've admired. He's a tremendous player and captain and I've got a good relationship with him."

McClaren, then asked if it was the case that he had dropped England's best right-sided midfielder, said grim-faced: "That's to be proved."

McClaren, who also left Sol Campbell and David James from his first squad, insisted the door was not closed on Beckham, Campbell or James.

"I don't think we can close the door on anyone's international career unless they choose to do so."

McClaren said he intends to take the team in a new direction.

He added: "In picking the squad I wanted evolution not revoltion. I wanted to start building towards Euro 2008 by keeping many experienced players who I believe can contribute and I wanted to add some youngsters, players who have come through the system and players who performed at the World Cup.

"I will try to succeed in getting the right blend and balance in the team and I believe I have got a great set of players I believe will get success, starting now.

"It is not so much making a statement - this is what I am. This is the way I work. It is a new beginning. I am now the manager of England and this is how I want to do things."

One of McClaren's first decisions as manager was to name Chelsea's John Terry as his new captain in place of Beckham.

McClaren added on Sky Sports News: "I picked John Terry for many reasons. Number one he is a winner and I want England to start winning.

"He leads by example, has great standards, expects to win and expects others to win.

"He is well respected within the squad and has a great hunger to succeed and great passion."

Terry said: "I want to win things for our country. We have got the most passionate fans in the world and the players are passionate about winning something."
