There may not be too many Tottenham shirt collectors on here but I thought I'd share a little story about the new 'limited edition' Tottenham 3rd shirt that sold out before the first home preason friendly.
Tottenham and Puma have had problems with the supply of the new kit, meaning that the on-sale date for the home shirt was pushed back to 22nd August - after the start of the new season. However, as stories of what this season's kits would look like bounced back and forth across the internet forums a specific rumour relating to a 3rd/UEFA Cup kit gathered pace. It would be chocolate brown and gold as a take on the Tottenham kit of the 1890s. Stories suggested it would be a limited edition, or not, or yes it would, or no it wouldn't depending on who you listened to.
Finally it was revealed that the kit could be ordered by telephone via a pre-order on the Spurs Direct mail line despite the fact that photos of the design hadn't even been released. This shirt was not strictly a limited edition, but would only be sold from the club shop and not high street retailers. Before kick off at the home friendly with Inter Milan the kit had completely sold out of adult sizes. There was uproar as to why the shirt had been a limited edition (of only 5,000) and that the club were preventing true fans from getting their shirts by doing so. EBay prices for these shirts continue to spiral. Leading to this:

Its never going to sell for that price but most of these shirts are selling for around £100 on EBay.
The facts are that the club ordered the shirt based on last season's sales for the 3rd kit. Total sales for that shirt? 1,500. A delay to the home kit being released and a rumour that the shirt is limited edition meant that 5,000 were sold in a week. Now which shirt is the rarest and most valuable? |
