Werders Bremen's planned friendly against VSK Osterholz-Scharmbeck has been called off at short notice. Torrential rain fall over the last two days have left the pitch in Lower Saxony unplayable and the Werder general manager Klaus Allof, trainer Thomas Schaaf as well as VSK coach Günter Hermann and VSK manager Hinrich Breden decided against playing the game on saftey grounds at 3pm on Tuesday afternoon.

The Werder team instead trained at the Weser Stadium at 4:30pm on Tuedays 22.08.2006.

Could it have possibly been a more attractive draw? The draw for the 2006/2007 Champions League unleashed a string of emotions among the Werder Bremen staff ranging from a shaking of heads, stunned gasping, respect and anticipation. No one at the club could have dreamed of planning to play English champions FC Chelsea and Spanish champions anf Champions League title holders FC Barcelona in the coming months. To add to the difficulty of the group, Bulgarian champions Levski Sofia were also pitted in Group A.

"We have two top favourites for the Champions League title in our group", commented headcoach Thomas Schaaf with a view to the up-coming tasks. The trainer received the result of the draw by telephone on the way to the team hotel in Essen. The Green-Whites are staying at the hotel prior to their clash with FC Schalke 04. With a view to progressing to the latter stages of the tournament Schaaf said: "Every one is reckoning with just Chelsea and Barcelona playing out first and second place in the group which means us having to battle it out with Sofia for third place - we intend to frustrate th favourites a little though. It's an interesting task."

Werders chairman of the board of management Jürgen L. Born, who followed the draw live at the Grimaldi Forum Monaco along with team manager Klaus Allofs and press director Timo Polster glowed: "The absolute 'Crème de là Créme of world football will be at the Weser Stadium, that'll be a real festival for the team and our fans. These games are a fantastic opportunity for us to improve our value in Europe yet further. We will really have to prepare well if we are to overcome this challenge."

Although Werder have two of the top teams in Europe in their group - they have no reason to hide and Klaus Allofs is convinced of it: "We have no complexes. Those who play in the Champions League must be prepared to face the best and we have the opportunity to do that", commented the ex-German international. "Naturally we're the underdogs but we're not without a chance. There are always surprises in football. We want to make it to the second round." The manager is especially looking forward to the visit of Barcelona: "We played two very good games against Barcelona last season but couldn't pic up a point. Since then the teams have developed yet further." Four of the five players awarded prizes for their performances in the Champions League last season were from the Spanish club. Ronaldinho, defender Carlos Puyol, midfield playmaker Deco and striker Eto'o were selected along with Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann as top players of the last season. Klaus Allofs added: "That says it all about the kind of quality Barcelona possess." The manager also sees the challenge they face against English champions Chelsea: "With Michael Ballack now in their side it makes the game against Chelsea all the more interesting." Werder were also warned not to take the Bulgarian champions Levski Sofia too lightly. "A very unpredictable opponent", noted Allofs.

Captain Frank Baumann reacted to the draw with the wink of an eye: "We are happy to take on the roll of favourites in our group. No, but seriously, it's a fantastic task. Of course it'll be very difficult, facing the top club teams in the world, but we'll do all in our power to progress from the group." German international Tim Borowski insured that Werder will go into the Champions League confidently: "We got a tough group but we know how strong we are and because of that we rate our chances even against these kind of tems."

Werder Bremen will make their Champions League 2006/2007 debut in London against English Premier League champions FC Chelsea on Tuesday, 12.09.2006. The Green-Whites first home game will be on Wednesday, 27.09.2006 against Spanish giants FC Barcelona with the Bulgarian champions, and Champions League debutants, Levski Sofia coming to the Weser Stadium on Wednesday, 18.10.2006 and the return leg in Sofia on Tuesday, 31.10.2006. Werder's home clash with Michael Ballack, Frank Lampard, John Terry and Co. will take place on Wednesday, 22.11.2006. The final group game for Thomas Schaaf's men will be in Barcelona against the title holders on Tuesday, 05.12.2006.

Just as last weekend, Werder Bremen will again be involved in the top game of the weekend. On Friday, 25.08.2006, the Green-Whites will play FC Schalke 04 at 8:30pm at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen. For Werder it's an oportunity to make history by taking nine points from the first three games of the season and at the same time break their duck of six defeats on the trot at Schalke in the Bundesliga, DFB-Cup and League Cup.

"Over the last couple of years we have come close to taking the points from Gelsenkirchen and we will do all in our power to win a clash between two top teams", explained captain Frank Baumann. Torsten Frings is also confident prior to the tie with the UEFA Cup participant. "We're strong away from home and I'm convinced that we can win this time around", continued the German international. Trainer Thomas Schaaf is also convinced that his side can overcome the 'Knappen' who after a stumbling start will be determined to get back on track: "You can present yourself against us and take a step forward, they will want to do that", said the 46 year old.

The anticipation prior to the game is great with a duel between "Two teams with high expectations", in the words of Schaaf who is looking forward to Werder's first Friday night game since 09.03.2001 when they played Bayer Leverkusen. Baumann: "That's always a really special event that everyone is looking forward to. Games under floodlights add an extra kick". Schaaf is looking forward to the match too: "We've often performed very well playing in the evening."

Schalke added to their side in pre-season with Halil Altintop from 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Peter Lövenkrands from Glasgow Rangers, Mathias Abel from FSV Mainz 05 as well as Markus Heppke, Timo Kunert, Dennis Lamczyk and Mesut Özil from their own youth side. At the same time they also lost two vital players in Christian Poulsen (FC Seville) and Ebbe Sand (career end). The 'Knappen' also lost Mimoun Azaouagh (FSV Mainz 05), Christofer Heimeroth (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Joseph Laumann (Rot-Weiß Ahlen), Thomasz Waldoch (Karriereende) along with Marco van Hoogdalem and Thomas Kläsener (both Rot-Weiss Essen).

Schalke will definately be without the services of Mladen Krstajic (suspension), Christian Pander (knee-operation) and Frank Rost (cut on shin). A question hands over the availability of Dario Rodriguez (muscle problem) and Soren Larsen (thigh injury). Werder coach Thomas Schaaf has a full squad at his disposal with the only exception being Per Mertesacker who is still in rehabilitation after a heel operation in July.
