Villarreal midfielder Robert Pires is out for six months after tearing cruciate ligaments in his left knee. The news comes just two days after centre-back Gonzalo Rodriguez sustained exactly the same injury, ruling out two of manager Manuel Pellegrini’s key players for the majority of the season.
Club President Fernando Roig labelled the injury a “massive blow,” adding “this is terrible news for everybody, given that just days away from the first league fixtures, our preparations have been ruined.”
Nevertheless, Roig added that although the injuries make life difficult, the team “must move forward. There's nothing we can do and we can't let our heads drop.”
He also confirmed the possibility that the club would dip into the transfer market to make up for the losses, stating “we need to strengthen the squad and well do so as best we can.”
