Primera Liga Best XI (Round 1)
Abhishek Thakur selects the eleven players who left an indelible mark on the first round of Primera Liga action.
The Primera Liga kick-off saw Barcelona, Valencia and Atletico Madrid struggle for wins, while Real Madrid and Villarreal played out a scoreless draw.
It was Getafe and Sevilla who picked up the most impressive of wins, over Osasuna and Levante, respectively, and thus locked out a lion's share of the spots.
Goalkeeper
1 Abbondanzieri (Getafe): Bernd Schuster's jackpot, the Argentine number one was at his imperious best, producing save after save as desperate Osasuna tried to find the net from outside the area.
Defenders
2 Alves (Sevilla): The promising wing-back just keeps getting better and better. After holding his own against Ronaldinho and yet supplying more than his share of balls into the area, the young Brazilian was at it again, ripping clueless Levante to shreds on the right.
3 Perea (Atletico Madrid): One of the most consistent defenders from last season proved to be the key for Atleti again, keeping Racing's Pedro Munitis on a tight leash, and helping his side to a clean sheet and a vital away win.
4 Alexis (Getafe): A summer import from the relegated Malaga, he was on the money from the word go in his first official game for Schuster, and made a big impression against Milosevic and Soldado.
5 Antonio Lopez (Atletico Madrid): Did Javier Aguirre proud for choosing him over the more dynamic Mariano Pernia, but will have to consistently produce such performances if he is to keep his fellow Spanish international left-back at bay. Perhaps a more advanced role for Pernia beckons!
Midfielders
6 Celestini (Getafe): The Swiss midfielder put in a superb display on the right, providing Getafe with most of their chances. The 30-year-old also produced a scorching drive to beat Ricardo in the Osasuna goal, from some distance.
7 Emerson (Real Madrid): While their overall performance left a lot to be desired, perhaps for the first time since Makelele's departure, Real looked comfortable when they did not have the ball, and not like conceding any second. Cannavaro and Diarra played their part, but it was the tenacious Brazilian who had his tentacles around Villarreal's creative designs. Absolutely nothing went through the centre. Finally, poor Casillas can dare to harbour hopes of a 'Zamora'.
8 D'Alessandro (Zaragoza): Deportivo might have managed a narrow win, but the former Pompey player made a huge promise with his display on the night. Combined beautifully with Ewerthon and Diego Milito to cause Depor lots of problems. If only Aimar can look less lost, their South American attack is going to go places this season.
9 Messi (Barcelona): With no Ronaldinho around, and the ghosts from Monaco ready to engulf the Catalans, the teenager stepped up to show Barcelona the way with a superb second half display, as they battled from behind to take an unlikely win in Vigo.
Forwards
10 Kepa (Sevilla): Showed some superb finishing to pick up the first hat-trick of the season, against a Levante side that had no clue what they were doing in top flight.
11 Villa (Valencia): Was a revelation - if one can say so about someone who scored 25 goals the previous season - in his new, more mobile and creative role just behind Morientes. Created lost of chances and lots of space for the former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker to make an impact on debut. Luis Aragones might want to have a look at the video, too see how well he can combine with another striker when not shunted to the flanks.
Honourable Mentions
Among others who deserve a mantion, are Toni Doblas, who produced a string of fine saves to deny Racing Santander the draw they probably deserved, Cannavaro and Diarra for promising a fix to Real Madrid's leaky defense, Marcos Senna, for running himself into the ground and refusing to submit, even as his teammates were shut out by Real, Fernando Baiano, for terrorising the Barcelona defense, and almost sending the Champions to another shock defeat, and Walter Pandiani, for fighting ever so hard for an Espanyol side that might have to struggle to stay in top flight again.
