Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder will attempt to sign another striker before Thursday's transfer deadline.

The Magpies are keen to strengthen, even though the injury sustained on his debut by Obafemi Martins proved less serious than first feared.

Martins, a £10million from Inter Milan, was taken off on a stretcher an hour into his debut in the 2-0 Barclays Premiership defeat at Aston Villa yesterday.

Roeder was relieved to discover the injury was nothing more than a severe dead leg and Martins should be available when Fulham head for St James' Park on September 9.

However, Newcastle's lack of strength in depth remains a concern for the manager.

Shola Ameobi missed the game at Villa Park through a combination of his worryingly persistent hip problem and a sore hamstring, while £9.5million signing Albert Luque is yet to make the most of the chance to prove himself after a poor first season.

With Michael Owen expected to be sidelined for most of the campaign, Roeder is looking for another frontman, although adding to his defence remains a priority.

A commanding central defender is high on his list with Chelsea's Robert Huth a target.

The German international missed out on a £5million move to Middlesbrough when he failed a medical, and although Boro are keen to take him on loan, Newcastle have emerged as rivals.

Jonathan Woodgate's impending return to the Premiership on loan has also seen him linked with both north-east clubs.

However the Magpies are concerned about the injury history of their former player, who has managed only 14 games in two years at Real Madrid.

Roeder said: 'I am living on the mobile phone at the moment, but one of the biggest problems we have is that the season has now started in the rest of Europe.

'Coaches have got their squads together and it is proving difficult to prise players away.'

Real midfielder Thomas Gravesen has had to remain patient as Newcastle have worked to strengthen in other areas, while Wayne Bridge's early-season form at Chelsea, coupled with the Ashley Cole saga, have complicated matters on that front.

Boro Await Woody's Word
BORO expect to hear in the next 24 hours whether Jonathan Woodgate is to ready resume his Premiership career with his hometown club.
The 26-year-old centre-half is being allowed to return to England on a season's loan by Spanish giants Real Madrid.
Boro held talks with Woodgate today and hope the England international will be tempted by the chance of playing at the stadium where he once held a season ticket.
"We've had discussions with him and he wants time to think about what he wants to do," said Boro manager Gareth Southgate tonight. "I'm quite hopeful. We've done everything we can to try to make it happen. I hope to get some positive news on it tomorrow.
Other Premiership clubs are reportedly keen on Woodgate but Southgate is hopeful that the player will accept the challenge laid down today.
"I'm not actually sure what the decision is or who else is involved but the talks we held were very positive and we've made it clear we want to bring him here if at all positive," he added.
With the transfer deadline drawing ever nearer, Southgate still has other irons in the fire and he confirmed that German international Robert Huth still among his targets.
"We're still actively talking with a couple of other clubs," he said after the 4-0 defeat to Portsmouth at the Riverside.
"There's no change through tonight, it just confirms some of the things I already knew.
"The window closes on Thursday night and I'm confident we will have a body or bodies in by then. We're in discussions with different players in different positions and that hasn't altered."

Magpies steal in for Gomaa
Blackburn target Wael Gomaa has undergone a trial with Newcastle in a bid to earn a Premiership contract.
Rovers manager Mark Hughes was thought to have been running the rule over the imposing central defender this week, but Goma underwent a St James's Park training session on Tuesday instead.
The Egypt international is confident of impressing Magpies boss Glenn Roeder, and earning a dream move to England prior to Thursday's transfer deadline.
"I trained with Newcastle's first team and put on a good show," the 31-year-old told FilGoal.com
Roeder has identified defence as an area of his team which requires strengthening and the Al Ahli stopper could fit the bill.
Gomaa will train again with Newcastle on Wednesday, before returning to Egypt to join the national side who are preparing for an African Cup of Nations qualifier.
