Liverpool face a race against time in their bid to land Blackburn defender Lucas Neill before the transfer window closes after a £2m offer was rejected.
The 28-year-old is in the final year of his contract and has told Blackburn he will not be signing another deal.
BUt BBC Sport understands there is still a major difference in valuation.
Under new Fifa rules, players over 28 can buy out their contract in the final year of their deal, but Neill is hoping a compromise can be reached.
If Australian World Cup star Neill quits, Blackburn are likely to move for Manchester City's Danny Mills.
Neill was sent off in Blackburn's opening day defeat at Portsmouth - and was also involved in a controversial challenge that broke Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher's leg at Ewood Park in 2003.
The player's agent Peter Harrison said recently: "They (Blackburn) have made an offer which Lucas has declined - he is not going to be signing a new contract at Blackburn.
"He has enjoyed his time there, he loves the club and the fans, he just feels it is time for a change." |
