Deschamps' rude awakening Saturday 9 September, 2006

The 1-1 draw with Rimini didn’t surprise Didier Deschamps, who warns
Juventus this is what life in Serie B will be like.
“We have discovered what awaits us this season,” said the Coach at
the Stadio Neri. “We knew before it started that this year would be an
uphill struggle. We’d need time to acclimatise, but unfortunately we have
none.”
The Bianconeri were demoted in the Calciopoli trial and docked 17
points, but after one game they already find themselves 19 points adrift of
the leaders, which include Napoli.
The home side managed to snatch an equaliser thanks to Jean-Alain
Boumsong’s error after Rimini had already gone down to 10 men.
“Rimini were more aggressive, but we had the extra man and I was
hoping for a victory. We made a mistake in defence and conceded the goal,
which complicated matters somewhat. With so many internationals, we had less
than two days to prepare for this game. Perhaps psychologically we were also
shaken, but after an hour we lacked the stamina to get the result.”
Matteo Paro’s name enters the history books, as he scored Juve’s
first ever Serie B goal, but it wasn’t enough to earn victory.
“I’ve always dreamed of this moment and my excitement was only
marred by Rimini’s equaliser,” said the youth team player.
“We’re content with the point, but must improve and adapt to the
mentality of Serie B. It’s less quality, but you need more grit.”
