斯維斯達十月缺席

United defender Mikael Silvestre will be absent in October as he nurses a metatarsal injury.

Assistant manager Carlos Queiroz confirmed the bad news on Friday, when he briefed the media ahead of this weekend's match against Newcastle.

"Mikael Silvestre's injury is more serious than we thought," said Carlos. "It's something in his metatarsal and he'll be out for six weeks."

Queiroz also said that Darren Fletcher and midweek match-winner Louis Saha have minor problems but both should be fit to face the Magpies on Sunday.

Better news comes through the recuperation of Ryan Giggs, who has started jogging as he bids to shake off a hamstring injury.

"He’s started individual runs, not with the team," revealed Carlos. "We think he’ll be fine for Wigan. He’s doing well, his recovery process is nothing special and everything’s ok."

Queiroz feels that, regardless of which players feature on Sunday, both sets of fans can expect the traditional bout of goals and excitement against Glenn Roeder's Magpies.

"As far as I remember, Newcastle against Manchester always results in great, spectacular games with lots of goals," he said. "No matter which players are playing on Sunday for Newcastle or for us, it will be showtime for sure. It’s always like that."

Carlos is well aware of the need to return to winning ways domestically, after dropping points in the last two weekends against Arsenal and Reading.

Rio Ferdinand has admitted he longs to be named captain of United.

Following Roy Keane's eight-year stint as skipper, the armband passed to Gary Neville at the end of the last year after Keane's abrupt departure.

Ferdinand ackowledges that Neville is the right man for the job but confesses it's a role he'd like to be considered for in the future.

"Like any other player I want to be captain of my club," revealed the defender at the launch of his autobiography Rio: My Story.

"It's the manager's decision and Gary was a more than worthy candidate who was also in the reckoning for the England captaincy.

"I'd love to be captain of Manchester United but right now it is Gary Neville and I am more than happy with that," he added.

Ferdinand was made captain of former club Leeds United in his final season, before his £30million switch to Old Trafford.

Reds legend Paddy Crerand believes it is essential United do not slip up against Newcastle on Sunday.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side return to Premiership duties following the hard-fought 1-0 win over Benfica on Tuesday, but the Reds have taken just one point from the last two league games, following defeat to Arsenal with a 1-1 draw against Reading.

United have never lost to the Magpies at Old Trafford in the Premiership, and Crerand says now would be a particularly poor time to buck that trend.

“What we mustn’t do is find ourselves playing catch up with Chelsea, a win against Newcastle is imperative,” he told United Review.

“We have to bounce back after the disappointing results against Reading and Arsenal. Fair play to Arsenal, they were magnificent – you have to hold your hands up and say that.

“But, people mustn’t get too downhearted by the last two league games. We’re still way ahead of Liverpool and Arsenal and people were predicting them to challenge Chelsea. There’s a long way to go.”
