Toon's Taylor admits acting
Referee Mike Dean was the only person at Old Trafford on Sunday not to spot the ball strike Newcastle United’s Steven Taylor’s arm and his subsequent swallow dive following Darren Fletcher’s fierce shot.
Taylor hit the ground as if polexaded in the chest by the shot, no doubt influencing the referee’s decision not to give the spot-kick.
But we can reveal that Taylor not only has previous when it comes to this trick, he also admitted as much two years ago in the Reds’ matchday programme.
His interview for the Old Trafford match on 24 April 2005 came soon after another ridiculous attempt to avoid a penalty following a handball in a match against Aston Villa. On that occasion he failed to con the referee and was shown the red card, with the penalty given.
When reminded of the incident he told United Review, “I’ve had a terrible ribbing about it from everyone at the club. They keep playing that song ‘I Shot The Sheriff’ at the training ground.
"But do you want to know a secret?," he continued. "I’ve tried this trick before, stopping shots on the line with my hand, and I got away with it on both occasions. So I decided to try it again. But unfortunately I got caught out this time…”
He obviously thought enough time had elapsed to try it again... and he was proved right.
