Kewell set to hang up boots

Harry Kewell is set to hang up his boots after he found himself difficult to
recover from his long-term injury.

Kewell has not played since scoring the equaliser in the 2-2 draw with
Croatia that earned his country a place in the knockout stages of the World
Cup in June.

The 28-year-old, who flew out to his family home in Smithfield, Australia to
undergo a series of operations to cure the niggling problems last month, is
expected back in action in December.

But after discussing whether continuing his football career with his family
and Liverpool side, Kewell has said sadly that he will retire and the
retirement news will be made public by Sunday.

"We've discussed everything with Liverpool since I've been out here," said
Kewell. "They know exactly what I'm doing and when I decide to retire, the
manager, players and the staff all respect my decision."

He admitted the decision is hard to be made and he hope all of his fans can
feel for him.

The news is a huge blow to Liverpool as they expect the Australian winger
will be back in December. Liverpool official still haven't commented for
Kewell's decision.

Smudge ready to give thanks

Alan Smith will use this Sunday's clash with Liverpool as an opportunity to thank the visitors' backroom staff for their assistance when he sustained his horrific injury at Anfield in February.

The 25-year-old striker suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle in United's FA Cup defeat, and was indebted to the speedy actions of the medical staff from both teams.

"You cannot put a price on the lengths people will go to in an effort to try and help you, most of which is not seen," Smith admitted.

"If the people from Liverpool had not acted as swiftly as they did, the situation could have been a lot worse. It will be nice to have a chance to thank them personally on Sunday."

Although some Liverpool fans came under fire for their conduct around the injury, including rocking the player's ambulance as it attempted to leave the ground, Smith bears no grudges.

"Unfortunately, people drag up the tiny part about the ambulance," he explained. "We are talking about one person in a million.

"It's sad we always seem to want to dwell on the negatives rather than the positives. I never really noticed anyway, so there are no negative feelings from my point of view.

"For every individual doing something like that, there were loads and loads, particularly at Liverpool, who wished me well. John Arne Riise got in touch, as did most of their players."



Three Reds to be recognised

Sunday's match will be a special occasion for three United stars past and present.

Sir Bobby Charlton, Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney each have reason to celebrate various milestones in their careers.

Before kick-off, Sir Bobby will be presented with a figurine from the club to mark the 50th anniversary since his debut. The United legend made his Reds' bow on 6 October 1956 against Charlton at Old Trafford.

He will be joined on the pitch on Sunday by some of his former team-mates including Denis Law, Bill Foulkes and Wilf McGuinness, as well Bobby Ayre who was in Charton's starting line-up on the day of Sir Bobby's debut.

Other legends in attendance will be Sir Tom Finney, Roger Hunt, Jimmy Armfield, Tommy Smith and Ian Callaghan.

Sir Bobby will then turn presenter when he hands over a special silver salver to Reds' midfielder Paul Scholes who will make his 500th appearance for United on Sunday.

Scholes' team-mate Wayne Rooney will also reach a significant landmark. The striker will play his 100th game in a red shirt since his switch from Everton in August 2004 against Rafael Benitez's side.

The final activity before kick-off involves fan representatives from both teams who will exchange special friendship pennants on the pitch.

At half-time there will be a five-a-side penalty shoot-out between disabled fans of both clubs, while the winners from Football in the Community's Streetlife tournament which takes place at The Cliff on Saturday will receive their medals

Manchester United and Liverpool have been working closely in a bid to improve relations between fans of both clubs at this Sunday’s match at Old Trafford.

A number of incidents have marred recent meetings between English football’s two most successful teams. But the clubs have agreed a series of initiatives to try and put an end to any clashes between supporters.

“Over the last couple of years, there have been some incidents with fan behaviour. We don’t want to see that,” said Sir Alex on Friday. “Both sets of fans should realise they are supporting two great football clubs.”

Friendship pennants designed by Liverpool and United supporters will be exchanged prior to kick-off at Sunday’s game, while Liverpool legends Roger Hunt, Ian Callaghan and Tommy Smith will participate in a pre-match tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton, who this month celebrates the 50th anniversary of his United debut.

The concourse at the away end of the stadium on Sunday will be decked out with posters commemorating Liverpool’s history.

There will also be eighteen Liverpool stewards in the away section to supervise visiting supporters, working alongside United's security staff inside and outside the stadium, while away fans will be held back after the final whistle until the home fans have left the stadium.

A statement on Liverpool's website acknowledged the new measures, saying: "Discussions were held at chief executive level and it was decided things need to change. Both clubs are saying to fans that we don't expect everyone to like each other, but there's a line which you simply can't step beyond."
