Jancker to leave China after woeful season
BEIJING, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Former German international Carsten Jancker's disappointing spell at Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua is over after they said they would not renew his contract, state media reported on Tuesday.
The 32-year-old striker could manage only one goal in an injury-plagued six-month stint with the China Super League (CSL) club.
'I don't know why but this is probably one of the darkest moments of my career,' the Shanghai Daily quoted Jancker as saying.
'I thought I could score a lot of goals when I first came here but it turned out to be very difficult... I should have done much better here in the CSL,' he said.
Jancker signed a six-month contract with Shenhua in May for about $500,000, but struggled for form after a mid-season thigh injury saw him miss several matches.
Shenhua coach Wu Jingui was philosophical about the former Bayern Munich forward's difficult season.
'Jancker basically did not play to his potential. We can't deny his form. Regardless, he is a very good player,' Wu told the Shanghai Evening Post.
'Had he not been injured, I believe he would have made a bigger mark at Shenhua.'
Jancker will leave Shanghai for Italy this week 'for a rest' before making a decision on his playing future, the paper said.
At his best, the burly 1.94-metre striker was a potent aerial threat for Germany and Bayern, winning the European Cup in 2001 and the German league title four times.
