Weather conditions were fairly good for football, and J. Hendrix Memorial Arena saw a crowd turnout of 2414. Villanova started off with a 3-5-2 lineup. The following players took the field: Refer - Nocula, Lockowandt, Zimmermann - Balte, Kempf, Schüler, Sorgalla, Benedetter - Meschede, Westhagen.
FR4 tactics involved an interesting 5-4-1 combination. Lineup: Höfenkoppel - Agustiono, Colmenares, Larsson, Heng Tuck, Won Chang - Talpaz, Chun Leung, Jiin shuh, Tuckey - Man Fung.
For their match strategy, FR4 had decided to use their ability to counter-attack whenever possible. FR4 nearly produced a goal as Sun Man Fung set up David Tuckey for a strike from a seemingly impossible angle. The receiver wasn't as clear-headed though, and put the shot wide. Some great play up the middle by Villanova led to a chance for Klaus Balte to get the go-ahead goal in the 3rd minute, but the shot hit the crossbar. FR4's defense sent a ball soaring up the middle on a beautiful counterattack, but Kristoffer Larsson's finish was met by the reaching hands of the keeper. Many in the crowd felt the referee was being too lenient when he only showed FR4's Josué Colmenares a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind in the 28th minute. Villanova were forced to a substitution as Hans Josef Refer couldn't continue playing due to the rough treatment, forcing Jack White to come in from the sidelines. In the 34th minute, Alexander Benedetter came in on the right, feinted, then sped past the off-balance defender to put away the 1 - 0 goal, giving Villanova the lead. Gatot Subakti Agustiono knocked one home in the 39th minute on the counterattack, making the score 1 - 1. The left side created an opportunity for the visitors in the 40th minute, and Sun Man Fung wasn't about to let it go by. He got past the defenders and fired a shot that the keeper just missed. 1 - 2 for the visitors. 1 - 2 was the halftime score. Villanova, bringing their ball possession to 66 percent, dominated the battle.
In the 58th minute, Villanova's Jurand Nocula found an opening in the visitors' left side defense, but his shot was handled easily by the keeper. After 60 minutes, a well-worked counterattack by FR4 on the right presented an easy opportunity in front of the goal that was duly converted Deng Jiin shuh to make it 1 - 3. In the 66th minute of the match, Villanova's Silas Meschede demonstrated his famed speed as he raced past his marker and passed the ball to Redlof Westhagen who chipped it in for 2-3. Villanova evened the numbers in the 71st minute when Cornelius Lockowandt netted a free kick for 3 to 3. In the 75th minute, the home side managed to get a 4 - 3 lead as Raymond Sorgalla flipped the ball in after a cross pass from the right. FR4's Gatot Subakti Agustiono had to watch the rest of the game from the sidelines, after twisting his ankle in the 78th minute. He Ming Fang was the replacement. The visitors didn't give in and, after 79 minutes, Kristoffer Larsson got through the home side's central line of defense, rolling in the levelling goal to make it 4 - 4. In the 82nd minute, Villanova's Jochen Kempf received a yellow card for going into a challenge studs first. Villanova held the ball, with a clear 60 percent of possession.
As neither team had managed to win, extra time was called. Zhu Chun Leung of FR4 received a yellow card in the 98th minute for unsportsmanlike behaviour. The result was still a draw, so the match had to be settled with penalties.
Villanova's Cornelius Lockowandt coolly put the ball past Peer Höfenkoppel. 5 - 4. FR4's Sun Man Fung, obviously having last minute doubts, produced a loose ball to the right post. Unfortunately Jack White made a premature move to the left and didn't make it back. New score: 5 - 5. Villanova's Jurand Nocula made no mistake. Peer Höfenkoppel didn't have a chance. 6 - 5. FR4's Chen Won Chang had nerves of steel at the penalty, changing the score to 6 - 6. Villanova's Klaus Balte coolly put the ball past Peer Höfenkoppel. 7 - 6. FR4's Zhu Chun Leung kept his cool as he faced down Jack White. His composure paid off as he scored easily for 7 - 7. Villanova's Silas Meschede made no mistake. Peer Höfenkoppel didn't have a chance. 8 - 7. FR4's He Ming Fang, obviously having last minute doubts, produced a loose ball to the right post. Unfortunately Jack White made a premature move to the left and didn't make it back. New score: 8 - 8. Villanova's Jack White coolly put the ball past Peer Höfenkoppel. 9 - 8. FR4's Deng Jiin shuh, obviously having last minute doubts, produced a loose ball to the right post. Unfortunately Jack White made a premature move to the left and didn't make it back. New score: 9 - 9. Boy, does Robert Zimmermann of Villanova know how to treat a football or what?! Twisted it like a crescent for 10 - 9. FR4's Ofer Talpaz made no mistake. Jack White didn't have a chance. 10 - 10. Villanova's Jochen Kempf hesitated a long time before shooting a penalty going just wide of the left post. Still 10 - 10. FR4's Peer Höfenkoppel made no mistake. Jack White didn't have a chance. 10 - 11.
The most dominating Villanova player was without a doubt Stephan Schüler.However, Jack White made a disastrous appearance. Most important FR4 player was Zhu Chun Leung. However, Chen Won Chang made a disastrous appearance. The match ends 10 - 11.
