Leeds midfielder Bradley Johnson has been approached by the USA about playing for them in next summer's World Cup finals in South Africa.

Johnson, who scored his sixth goal of the season against Norwich on Monday, qualifies for the USA through his late grandfather and is currently being monitored by them.

Johnson said: "I've spoken to them. They've phoned me up and asked if I was eligible to play for them and would I like to.

"I said I would if the chance came along, but I'm just concentrating on Leeds at the moment and a call-up would be an extra bonus for me.

"I've known for a long time I could play for them. My dad speaks to our family in America, my grandfather was Afro-American, so I've always known.

"I don't want to jump too far ahead. They've said they are looking at me and if I was to get called up it would be based on my performances at Leeds which is what I'm focusing on."

BECKFORD HANDS IN TRANSFER REQUEST
06 Jan 2010
Leeds United can confirm that Jermaine Beckford...

Leeds United can confirm that Jermaine Beckford has handed in a transfer request.

The transfer request was handed in on December 30.

By handing in a transfer request it clearly indicates that the player wants to leave Leeds United.

However, that will only be allowed to happen in the event that it is decided to be in the best interests of Leeds United.

The best interests of Leeds United involve receiving both an acceptable transfer fee and securing a suitable replacement to ensure his departure does not have an adverse effect on the club's overall aim of securing promotion back to the Coca-Cola Championship.

Why Jermaine Beckford joining Newcastle United would see Leeds United win again

THE VICTORY THAT JUST KEEPS GIVING

Those Leeds United fans still insulated from the bitter Yorkshire winter by the warm fuzzy feeling of satisfaction generated by their sacking of Old Trafford last week, you might imagine, will have had their joy tempered by the news that the scorer of the only goal that day, Jermaine Beckford, had handed in a transfer request even before he danced past Wes Brown and slipped the ball past the despairing dive of Tomasz Kuszczak.

You might imagine that. But you would be quite wrong.

In signalling his desire to leave Elland Road, Beckford’s exploits at Old Trafford have merely upped the asking price Newcastle United or anyone else will have to pay because of the spotlight now trained on him. Time for those of a white rose persuasion to celebrate that goal all over again.

Beckford will leave West Yorkshire with the good will of his public there but the forward will soon discover that he will miss them more than they will miss him.

Goalscorers will inevitably grab the headlines but Leeds' deserved victory over their rivals from over the Pennines was not orchestrated by but merely decorated by Beckford.

The design was that of Simon Grayson, who sent out a side with a clear game plan of intense, energetic football from the off, the construction of the win was the high tempo snapping at heels of Michael Doyle, the simple tidy passing of Neil Kilkenny and the surging forward runs of Jonny Howson.

It was in the midfield where the battle was won – Leeds players simply wanting it more than their more vaunted opponents.

Beckford applied the finishing touch of course, and a terrific one it was too, though the one immediately before owed more to good fortune than talent, Beckford’s clumsy attempt to control Howson’s hopeful ball forward accidentally taking it away from Brown and creating the angle to beat Kuszczak.

That moment summed up Beckford perfectly for those who have watched him for more than 90 minutes last weekend: the unfinished article; the man who scores goals by the bucket load but went missing in Leeds’ recent play-off defeats and when Liverpool came calling in the Carling Cup; earning his luck with persistence but lucky all the same.

Beckford remains unproven at a level higher than the third tier. Newcastle, if that is where he ends up, as looks likely, are not buying a player guaranteed to menace Championship defences as he does those in League One. He might prove a massive success. But strikers of his quality abound in the division below the Premier League – none prosper at the top level.

Beckford clearly believes he is better than his current standing or else he wouldn’t have asked for a move. But if so then why not stay at Leeds and ride their wave of euphoria in to the Championship and possibly beyond?

The answer is found in the instant gratification culture that stalks English football. Now is Beckford's moment. This is his time. Beckford’s temperament is suspect. He is quick to temper and moody when things don't go his way. And he clearly believes his own hype. Just the type of character needed in the goldfish bowl at St James’ Park, eh?

Should Newcastle stump up a sizeable transfer fee, as they will now be forced to do because of the brouhaha surrounding the player, it will be for a player with just six months left on his current deal, available on a free in the summer.

Leeds will do right to cash in, safe in the knowledge that only a Devon Lock moment can prevent them leaving League One at the third time of asking.

He will almost certainly be replaced by a striker of equal or better proven talent for a fraction of the cost.

Billy Sharp, the Sheffield United striker who has been banging them in for fun at a limited Championship team in Doncaster Rovers, on loan, is up for sale and Leeds will be able to reinvest the money gifted by Newcastle in a player with more guile and touch, even if he lacks the physical presence of Beckford.

He will certainly be good enough to keep the goals flowing in League One. As would Aaron McLean of Peterborough, who is also available for a snip.

Ken Bates will talk of reluctantly letting Beckford go, the fans will wish him well, but Leeds will be stronger, or at least no weaker, for it.

Things are less certain for Beckford. He could find himself going from League One to the Championship to the Premier League – should Newcastle be promoted – inside eight months. Not a gentle ascent.

He may believe he is equipped for such a meteoric rise; the Bung senses the club he leaves behind’s steady climb back to whence they came is a surer bet.

WYCOMBE CAUSED MORE PROBLEMS THAN MAN U!
11 Jan 2010
Simon Grayson on Elland Road point...
Luciano Becchio in action against Wycombe

United manager Simon Grayson was quick to pay tribute to Wycombe Wanderers after Saturday's 1-1 Elland Road draw.

An early goal from Jonny Howson failed to fire Leeds to victory against the League One strugglers and, following the amazing win at Manchester United the previous weekend, Grayson described the game as a case of 'after the Lord Mayor's Show'.

"It was a very average peroformance," said the United boss.

"People thought we would win the game and the phrase 'after the Lord Mayor's Show' springs to mind.

"We were fortunate to be in front at half-time - we didn't work their goalkeeper enough. - and you have to give them credit afterwards.

"We didn't win enough tackles and show enough application, but Wycombe came and played without fear and caused us more problems than Man U last weekend. But, it's another point.

"It was below what we expect. You could say we hardly trained on all week or this or that, but there's no excuses.

"As disappointed as we are though it was another result. You have to pick up points home and away, and that's what we've done.

"We'll look at all the factors to make sure it doesn't happen again, but any point is a point nearer towards where we want to be."

A trio of young players have been allowed to leave Leeds United to further their careers elsewhere.

Defender Jonny Webb and midfielder Josh Falkingham have come to the end of their short-term contracts and are now free agents.

Webb made one first team appearance for the club, at Northampton in the FA Cup last season, while Falkingham didn't feature in the first team.

Midfielder Ollie Hotchkiss has also had his contract terminated by mutual consent.

Ollie has been on loan at Mansfield and could now sign for the Stags on a permanent basis.

Leeds United are pleased to confirm that striker Jermaine Beckford will be staying on at Elland Road for the remaining duration of his contract.

Conversations have been ongoing with the player and his representative since a transfer request was handed in on December 30.

The subsequent public knowledge of his transfer request has not been helpful in terms of stability, but having spoken with Jermaine all parties have decided it is in everyone's best interests that he stays until the end of the season and continues to help the club's bid for promotion.

This is despite several financial offers that have been made to the club.

Leeds United manager Simon Grayson said: "What we have achieved over the past 12 months has been a team effort by everyone and I'm delighted we have resolved this situation to assist us achieve what we are aiming to achieve.

"The whole squad has done terrifically over the season so far and the most important thing is that we continue what we have been doing.

"Promotion is our main aim, but we are still in two cup competitions and have plenty of football to come over the next few months.

"I'm keen to draw a line under the situation and now we can all move on together.

"I never wanted Jermaine to leave and we have turned down offers for him. We could have cashed in, knowing what could happen at the end of the season, but the chairman has backed me all the way, and it demonstrates what we are looking to achieve.

"Jermaine has always given 100 per cent and hopefully his goals will play a big part for us over the next few months."

AN OPEN LETTER FROM PRUTTS: FAREWELL FRIENDS...
02 Feb 2010

An open letter to Leeds United and the club's fans from David Prutton...

David Prutton

Dear All,

It's been one of the privileges of my life so far to have played for such a world renowned, highly respected football club.

The friendships I have made, the memories I hold dear and the sheer pleasure of being a Leeds player will stay with me for a long time.

Leeds United gets under your skin (as I'm sure all you avid fans know) and there will be a part of me that will always be Leeds.

I am proud to have played a part in bridging the gap between an uncertain past and a no doubt glorious future.

Leeds fans are loud, loyal and passionate. Make no mistake, you are the lifeblood of the club and forever will be.

You were always fantastic to me and I hold that in my heart as I move on.

Thanks for everything,

David Prutton (aka Prutts, aka 'Jesus')
