KUALA LUMPUR: Australia ended their run of stalemates with a stylish 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia while Japan and Korea Republic were the only teams to stay perfect after Match Day 3 of the second round qualifying for the Olympic Football Tournament Beijing 2008 on Wednesday.
The top two teams from the six groups advance to the final rounds, which will be played in three groups of four teams each between August 22 and November 21. The group winners will feature in the Beijing Olympics next year alongside hosts China.
GROUP A
Goals from Fahd Awadh, Hamad Al Enazi and Badr Al Mutawa helped Kuwait thrash minnows Pakistan 3-0 at the Punjab Stadium in Lahore and go top of the group with seven points.
Awadh (30) and Al Enazi (40) fired Kuwait into a strong position in the first half before Al Qadsiya's Al Mutawa sealed the win with his 90th minute strike.
In the other group match, Bahrain beat Qatar 4-2 in a thrilling encounter at the National Stadium in Manama.
Fawzi Mubarak Aiash (4) opened the scoring for Bahrain and Ismael Abdul Latif made it 2-0 for the hosts in the 11th minute. Adel Lami pulled one back for Qatar on the stroke of half time but Abdullah Omar Ismail restored Bahrain's two-goal advantage three minutes before the hour.
Majdi Siddiq got it right from the spot to make it 2-3 for Qatar in the 64th minute but Jesin John's goal three minutes from time extinguished the visitors' fightback.

GROUP B
Japan scored their third straight win with a flawless 3-0 defeat of Syria at the National Stadium in Tokyo to take control with nine points.
Striker Sota Hirayama netted a pair of goals (24, 71) after Akinori Ienaga had given Japan the lead in the 16th minute. Yasuharu Sorimachi's side can secure their spot in the final round if they beat Syria in the away game on April 18.
In Hong Kong, Malaysia stayed alive in the tournament after eking out a 1-0 over the hosts.
This was Malaysia's first win in the qualifiers so far and they owed it to Amirul Hadi Zainal's 25th minute goal when he weaved his way past three defenders before slotting the ball past Hong Kong goalkeeper Tse Tak-him.
Hong Kong were reduced to nine men after referee Chaiwat Kunsuta of Thailand redcarded striker Chan Siu-ki (65) and Kwok Kin-peng (stoppage time).

GROUP C
Oman bounced back from their 1-0 defeat to Lebanon in the previous round to drub Vietnam 3-1 at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex yesterday. The win gave the Omanis a slim lead on goal difference though Vietnam and Lebanon are also on six points.
Hassan Zaher (46), Younes Mubarak (48) and Maktoum Eid (89) hit the net for the hosts before Than Ban (90) scored a consolatory goal for Vietnam.
Meanwhile, there was shock in store for Indonesia when Lebanon handed out a 2-1 defeat to the hosts at the Lebak Bulus Stadium in Jakarta.
Hassan Matouq took advantage of a lapse in concentration in the rival backline and opened the scoring for the Lebanese in the 22nd minute and was called upon to fire the winner in the 62nd minute after Jajang Moliang had equalised on the hour.

GROUP D
Australia secured a vital 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia at the Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide, ending a two-match run of stalemates.
A headed goal in the 74th minute from Sydney FC defender Nikolai Topor-Stanley and an injury time goal from midfielder Kristian Sarkies was enough to ensure three important points for Australia and take them to within a point of the Saudis who remain top of Group D.
The result sees Australia move to five points after three matches.
Australia will now meet Saudi Arabia in Dammam in a fortnight before returning to Adelaide for the third and final home match against Iran on Wednesday 16 May.
Iran and Jordan played out a goalless draw at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran in the other group encounter.

GROUP E
India suffered a 2-0 defeat to visiting DPR Korea in Chennai and remained firmly rooted to the bottom of the table.
The Koreans are now on seven points in the group, two ahead of Iraq who drew 1-1 with Thailand in Prince Mohamed Stadium, Zerqa City, Jordan.
The Indians however were impressive in the opening 45 minutes and threatened to open the scoring several times only to have their attempts foiled by the alert Korean goalkeeper.
Eight minutes into the second period, Pak Nam Chol sped down the left flank for a brilliant left footed strike which beat the Indian custodian hands down. The Koreans made full use of the momentum which had swung their way and sealed the win in the 76th minute when Jong Su Hyok connected with a cross from Kim Kwang Hyok.
This was India's third successive loss after going down to Iraq (3-0) and Thailand (1-0) in previous encounters.
In Jordan, Sameer Saeed put Iraq in the driver's seat with his 22nd minute goal but Thailand ensured a share of the points when Teerathep Winothai equalised two minutes after the break.

GROUP F
Han Dong-won was on target twice as Korea Republic beat Uzbekistan 2-0 at the Wa Stadium in Ansan, south of Seoul, to lead the section with nine points.
The 20-year-old hitman connected with a Lee Keun-ho cross in the 33rd minute to open the scoring and a screaming volley in the 84th minute saw him grab his double. Earlier, the Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma striker had scored two goals in the team's win over UAE on March 14.
At the Sana'a Stadium, hosts Yemen went down fighting 2-1 to UAE. All the three goals in the match were scored late with Ahmed Khamees hitting the first goal for UAE in the 73rd minute. Yemen's Zahir Fareed restored parity nine minutes from time and the match ended in thrilling fashion when Al Shahi grabbed the winner in stoppage time.

Nigeria have been drawn in the same group with perennial rivals Ghana for the final group phase of the qualifiers for the 2008 Olympic Games.
The Dream Team will also face South Africa and Ethiopia in Group A of the qualifiers which start in June.
Ivory Coast have also been handed a tough draw as they play Mali, Senegal and Zambia in Group B.
Cameroon were drawn in Group C where they face Morocco, Guinea and Botswana.
The qualifiers will be played in a league format and will end in March next year.
The three group winners qualify for the final tournament at the Beijing Games.

KUALA LUMPUR: Japan, Korea Republic and Saudi Arabia posted wins on Match Day 4 of the second round qualifying for the Olympic Football Tournament Beijing 2008 on Wednesday and secured their berths in the final round which will kick off in August.
The top two teams from the six groups advance to the third and final round of qualifying (12 teams split into three groups) which will run through August 22 till November 21, with only the three group toppers representing Asia at the Beijing Olympic Games. China as hosts have automatic qualification.
GROUP A
Kuwait consolidated their position atop the table with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Pakistan in Kuwait City but the group remains wide open, especially the race for second spot.
On target for the Kuwaitis in the home game were Hamad Al Enazi and Badr Al Mutawa, both scoring a pair of goals.
Qatar ran out 4-0 winners against Bahrain in the other group encounter at the Al Sadd Stadium to keep alive their hopes of qualification. Ali Hassan Afeef, Bilal Mohamed, Majdi Siddiq and Majid Mohamed bulged the net for the Asian Games gold medallists.
STANDINGS: 1. Kuwait 10, 2. Qatar 7, 3. Bahrain 6, 4. Pakistan 0
GROUP B
Japan became one of the first teams, alongwith fellow East Asian powerhouse Korea Republic from Group F and Saudi Arabia from Group D, to book their berth in the final round of the qualifying with a facile 2-0 win over Syria at the Al Abbassiyin Stadium in Damascus.
Koki Mizuno (17) and Honda Keisuke (43) had finished the job for the Japanese before half time and despite Syria's best attempts the visitors stayed in control throughout the match.
With maximum points from four games, Yasuharu Sorimachi's side will be looking to end their campaign on a high note with wins against Hong Kong and Malaysia in the remaining outings.
In the other group game, Hong Kong virtually ended Malaysia's hopes of qualifying for the next round with a narrow 1-0 win at the MPPJ Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.
Yip Chi-ho was the hero for Hong Kong, scoring the solitary goal in the opening minute.

GROUP C
Vietnam took a big step towards securing their spot in the next round with a 2-0 win over Oman at the My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi. Nguyen Minh Phuong fired both the goals for the Vietnamese who went to nine points.
Lebanon stayed in touch, also on nine points, after Tareq Al Ali hit an inspiring brace for their 2-0 defeat of Indonesia at the Beirut Municipal Stadium.

GROUP D
Saudi Arabia came back from a goal down to beat Australia 2-1 in Dammam and booked their spot in the final round on the strength of head-to-head records.
Australia took the lead courtesy of a goal in first half injury time from striker Mark Bridge, but two goals in the space of eight minutes mid-way through the second half from Jufain Al Bishi (59) and Yousif Al Salem (67) were enough for the home team to claim all three points.
The defeat left the Australians tied on five points with Iran who thumped Jordan 3-0, thanks to goals from Hossein Kabi (36), Wahid Amraei (81) and Mehrdad Oladi (85).
Saudi Arabia defeated Jordan (1-0) and Iran (1-0) before slumping to a 2-0 loss to Australia in the previous round. In the remaining two matches against Jordan (May 16) and Iran (June 6), the head-to-head advantage is firmly with Saudi Arabia on the strength of these wins, thus securing their progress to the next round.

A brace from Nom Jal saw DPR Korea defeat India 2-0 in Pyongyang and stay in pole position for advancing deeper into the qualifying rounds.
Nom hit the first goal in the 58th minute before doubling the advantage and guaranteeing India's defeat with his second goal 20 minutes later.
In the other group game, a 90th minute strike from Karrar Jassim helped Iraq scrape out a 1-0 win against Thailand at the Army Stadium in Bangkok. Iraq were presented with invaluable man-advantage in the 75th minute when Thailand's Kriangkrai Pimrat was sent off after collecting two yellow cards and the West Asians successfully pressed forward for a goal.

GROUP F
Korea Republic, quarterfinalists in Athens 2004, had to bank on a late Baek Ji-hoon goal to keep Uzbekistan at bay 1-0 though the narrow win was enough to secure their berth in the final round.
The match looked destined for a draw when Baek struck seven minutes from time to give the Koreans their fourth consecutive victory. They are the only team other than Japan to boast of a perfect record thus far.
Uzbekistan's defeat left them in a scrap for second spot with the UAE who beat Yemen 2-0. Yemeni Zaher Fareed scored an own goal in the 50th minute and six minutes later Amer Mubarak doubled the advantage.

A 1-1 draw with Qatar put brakes on Kuwait’s qualification on Wednesday as the group remains wide open. Bahrain sidelined Pakistan 3-1 to go second in the group with nine points, two adrift leaders Kuwait and one more than Qatar.
Badr Al Mutawa gave Kuwait the lead from the spot in the 32nd minute but Moaz Yousif restored the parity for Qatar at the stroke of half time.

Japan, who became one of the first teams, along with fellow East Asian powerhouse Korea Republic, to book their berth in the final round on Match Day 4, ran out 4-0 winners against Hong Kong.

Lebanon overcame a gritty Vietnam 1-0 to book a spot in the next round while Indonesia recorded their first victory beating Oman 2-1.
Akram Mograbi’s strike in the sixth minute proved to be the match-winner for Lebanon, who are now on 12 points while Vietnam remain second with nine points.
After the barren first half, Habel Satya (61) and Ahmad Bustomi (75) scored for Indonesia while Oman’s only goal was scored by Abdullah Thoenes in the 69th minute.

GROUP D
West Asian powerhouse Saudi Arabia stormed into the final round with a 4-1 thrashing of Jordan in Dammam while 10-man Australia downed Iran 3-1 to stay in touch.
Jufain Al Beashi opened the Saudi account from the spot in the 14th minute and Mohammed Al Sahlawi made it 2-0 in the 36th minute. Yousif Al Salem made it 3-0 from the spot three minutes before interval while Al Sahlawi sealed the fate of Jordan in the 53rd minute. Jordan’s goal was scored by Issa Al Sabaah in the 59th minute.
In Adelaide, Aaron Downes gave hosts Australia the lead in second minute but Wahid Amrai made it 1-1 for Iran in the very next minute. Mark Bridge (43; penalty) and James Troisi (53) kept Australia’s hopes alive. Australia were reduced to 10-man in the 66th minute when Bridge was given his marching orders.

In Pyongyang, DPR Korea held Thailand goalless to advance to the final round while lowly India held top seeded Iraq 1-1 but the latter sailed through to the next stage as the group runners-up.
Karrar Jassim headed home the opener for Iraq in the 54th minute but Tarif Ahmed made it 1-1 in the 73rd minute for India.

GROUP F
Uzbekistan kept themselves in contention for a spot in the final round with a 2-0 victory over United Arab Emirates while Korea Republic, who have already made it to the next round, lost to Yemen 1-0 in Sana.
Shavkat Salomov (37) and Farkhod Tadjiev (55) netted Uzbekistan’s goals as their side climbed to second position with nine points. Yemen’s match-winner was scored by Yasser Bassehy in the 41st minute.

（吉隆坡）2008年北京奧運會亞洲區預選賽第五比賽日的比賽於昨日全面開戰，沙特、朝鮮、伊拉克一馬當先，成為6個小組中率先晉級淘汰賽的球隊。
按照競賽規則，6個小組中的前兩名將有機會晉級最後淘汰賽，這12支球隊將在最後淘汰賽中分成3組，每組頭名將代表亞洲參加2008年的北京奧運會足球賽。
預選賽A組的出線局勢極不明朗，在卡塔爾1比1戰平科威特和巴林3比1擊敗巴基斯坦之後之後，11分的科威特、9分的巴林和8分的卡塔爾都有機會從小組出線。
日本在4比0大勝香港之後成為B組率先晉級下一輪淘汰賽的球隊，李忠成、平山相太、本田圭佑和水野晃樹分別在7、45、52和60分鐘各入1球。本組的另外一場馬來西亞主場對陣敘利亞的比賽則以0比0告終。在本輪過後，日本以15分高居本組首位，敘利亞以7分排在第二，馬來西亞以4分排在第三，香港則以3分位居本組最後一名。

KUALA LUMPUR: The draws for the AFC Champions League 2007 and AFC Cup 2007 knockout stages as well as the AFC Final Round for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will take place on June 13, 2007, here at AFC House.
The draw ceremony will kick off with the AFC Final Round for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games at 1400 hours, followed by the AFC Cup draw at 1500 hours and then the AFC Champions League draw at 1530 hours.
While the line-up for the AFC Champions League and AFC Cup has been completed, six teams have already qualified for the AFC Final Round for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and six more will complete the line-up on June 6, 2007, which is the stage two final group qualifying day.
Coming out of the pots for the AFC Champions League knockout draw are Al Wahda (UAE), Al Hilal (Saudi Arabia), Al Karama (Syria), Sepahan (Iran), Urawa Red Diamonds, Kawasaki Frontale (both Japan) and Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma (Korea Republic). Defending champions Jeonbuk Motors, who got a bye into the knockout stage, round off the list.
For the AFC Cup, Al Nejmeh (Lebanon), Shabab Al Ordun, Al Wihdat and defending champions Al Faisaly (all Jordan), Sun Hei (Hong Kong), Singapore Armed Forces FC and Tampines Rovers (both Singapore) and Mahindra United (India) will be drawn for the quarterfinals.
Japan, Lebanon , Saudi Arabia , DPR Korea, Iraq and Korea Republic have confirmed their place to date in the AFC Final Round Qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games with one round to spare.

The continent's top 12 U-23 sides are left in the battle for three berths and Cameroon, who triumphed in a dramatic final in Sydney seven years ago, have again made an early statement of intent.
They swept all beside them in the northern town of Garoua, with Marc Mboua opening the scoring after just four minutes. Mboua added one more before half-time, but it was Serge Ngal who emerged as the hero with a hat-trick against the Guineans.
Cameroon's main challengers in Group C will be Morocco, who failed to find the necessary rhythm in Rabat against underdogs Botswana and only managed a 1-0 win. Nigeria, the only other African country to have won a Men's Olympic Football Tournament, tasted victory in their west African derby courtesy of a 3-2 reverse of Ghana, setting the tone for a tough and bruising group to come. Two Italian-based stars dominated the proceedings with Chievo's Obinna Nsofor scoring twice, one of them a penalty.
But Ghana matched their hosts in Abuja and were 2-1 ahead by the quarter-hour mark thanks to a Prince Tagoe effort and a curling free-kick by Udinese forward Asamoah Gyan, who played for the Black Stars at last year's FIFA World Cup™ finals. It was the Germany-based Solomon Okoronkwo who separated the two teams with the only goal of the second half, but Nigeria coach Samson Siasia said he needed more time together with his players to lift their competitive standard. "It is going to be difficult to get the right blend until we've played more matches," said the former international striker.
Also in Group A, South Africa came from behind to draw 2-2 with Ethiopia in Addis Ababa.
Zambia won their opening Group B game at home in Chingola against the backdrop of the tragedy less than 24 hours earlier, when 12 spectators were killed in a stampede at the end of a CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between their senior side and Congo. Zambia U-23 team coach Peter Kaumba dedicated his side's 2-0 triumph over Cote d'Ivoire to the supporters, saying afterwards: "This is for those fans. We send our condolences to their families." Two goals in the space of four first half minutes from Timothy Mbewe and Given Singuluma sealed victory for Zambia.
In another derby in west Africa, Mali won a potentially precious point in Senegal with goalkeeper Oumar Cissokho emerging as the hero of the match. The next round of African qualifying for Beijing 2008 will be played on 22 August.

KUALA LUMPUR: The line-up for the AFC Final Round Qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games was completed on a thrilling final day of second stage qualifiers with Australia, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Syria, Bahrain and Qatar confirming their spots on Wednesday.
The six teams join Japan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, DPR Korea, Iraq and Korea Republic for the AFC Final Round Qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games draw which will be held here at AFC House on June 13.
The 12 teams will be split into three groups of four each and the final round will run through August 22 till November 21, with only the group toppers representing Asia at the Beijing Olympic Games next year. Hosts China qualify automatically.
GROUP A
Qatar carried out a merciless 7-0 demolition of Pakistan in Doha to advance to the final round by pushing Kuwait into third position on goal difference.
Majed Mohamed (37), Yousef Ahmed (39, 64), Ali Hassan (41), Adel Lami (43), Talal Al Beloushi (69) and Waleed Jassim (73) hit the net for the Qataris.
Qatar finished level on 11 points with Kuwait, who lost to Bahrain 2-1 in their final crunch outing, and the seven goals scored on the day carried them through on the basis of a superior goal difference.
In Manama, Jesin John’s 90th minute strike settled the encounter against Kuwait in favour of Bahrain 2-1.
Fati Baba Tonde put Bahrain in the driver’s seat with his 23rd minute opening goal but Kuwait hit back through Abdullah Masheleh’s penalty. It was left to Jesin to break the deadlock and put Bahrain in the final round with his late winner.
Bahrain, who began the day in second position, finished with 12 points.

GROUP B
Japan completed their campaign with a predictable 3-1 rout of Malaysia in Tokyo for a perfect record of six straight wins.
The Japanese opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Iwata midfielder Kota Ueda fired a cross from the right to Meiji university defender Yuto Nagatomo, whose diving header beat the Malaysian goalkeeper.
Another university student, Shuto Suzuki, then drilled in a sizzling left-footer from outside the penalty area in the national stadium in Tokyo to make it 2-0 in the 33rd minute.
Malaysia, who had a mathematical chance of making it to the final qualifying round, only managed a couple of shots in the first half.
Malaysian skipper Subramaniam Sooryapparad avoided a whitewash when he later found the back of the net after some goalmouth confusion.
"The final qualifying round is very important. This win was a very good stepping stone to it," said Japan coach Yasuharu Sorimachi, who fielded seven new players.
But he said the team had to make quicker decisions and spray the ball around the field with more fluidity.
"I didn't think about anything but to dive into the goal. I was nervous today, but I'll do my best to join the Olympic team," said Nagatomo.
Syria’s path to the final round was confirmed even before they had kicked the ball against Hong Kong after Japan defeated Malaysia in Tokyo. This however did not stop the Syrians from running four goals past Hong Kong in their 4-1 victory in Damascus in their late evening match. Majed Al Haj was the star of the evening for Syria with two goals.

GROUP C
Vietnam made sure of their place in the final with a 2-1 win over Indonesia, thanks to a brace by Nguyen Vu Phong.
Vu Phong bulged the net in the seventh and 92nd minutes after Achmad Jufriyanto had pulled the Indonesians level in the 44th minute.
The win gave the Vietnamese top position in the group on goal difference though they finished with 12 points, the same as the other qualifiers Lebanon.
Lebanon, who qualified with a round to spare, play Oman in their last outing today.

GROUP D
Nick Ward hit a brace as Australia crushed hosts Jordan 4-0 to qualify for the next round in Amman.
With just a draw sufficing to reserve their berth, all of Australia’s goals came in the second half with David Williams opening the scoring in the 55th minute. Ward added two goals in the 67th and 75th minutes before Dario Vidosic got his name on the scorecard with a 90th minute strike.
The win saw the Australians collect 11 points and qualify behind Saudi Arabia from the group.
The Saudis, meanwhile, ended Iran’s hopes of advancing by handing out a 3-2 defeat to the hosts at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran.
Iran needed to win to have any chance of qualifying and hope that Australia lost, but failed to overcome goals from Abdullah Hawsawi, Nayef Hazazi and Abdul Lateef Al Ghannam.

Iraq, who qualified in the last round itself, completed their campaign on a victorious note with a 1-0 win over fellow group qualifiers DPR Korea and took top position in the pool.

Shavkat Salomov netted a brace and guided Uzbekistan to a 3-0 win over Yemen which booked their place in the final round as nearest challengers UAE lost to already-qualified Korea Republic 3-1 in the other group game.
Uzbekistan were badly in need of a win, and wanted UAE to lose, to qualify and their prayers were answered when Salomov found the net twice.
Korea Republic turned on the style against UAE for an emphatic victory. Lee Keun Ho fired the Koreans into the lead in the 32nd minute before grabbing his brace three minutes after the interval. Kim Chang Soo scored Korea’s third goal in the 81st minute with a good assist from Lee Keun Ho.
Yasser Matar pulled one back for UAE in the 71st minute.

日本、黎巴嫩、沙特、朝鮮、伊拉克、韓國在提前一輪率先出線後，澳大利亞、烏茲別克斯坦、越南、敘利亞、巴林和卡塔爾也在昨日的比賽中脫穎而出，一同將出席6月13日在亞足聯總部舉行的最後淘汰賽小組抽籤儀式。
這12支隊伍將分成3組，淘汰賽將從8月22日開始，今年11月21日結束，每個小組的頭名將代表亞洲與奧運會東道主中國一同代表亞洲參加2008年北京奧運會。

主將介紹：賓沙夏
現年只得17歲的賓沙夏是以色列國家隊的新希望，司職前鋒的他於去年夏天從特拉維夫夏普爾轉投眾星雲集的車路士。由於母親是波蘭人，故賓沙夏能夠很容易便在英國取得工作證，而他今季亦有在英超聯及足總盃後備上陣。在外圍賽附加賽對法國，賓沙夏才首次代表U21上陣，便於作客一役取得重要入球。此外，他於今年 2月以17歲半的年紀，成為以色列歷史上最年青國腳，3月份對愛沙尼亞的歐洲國家盃外圍賽，賓沙夏才第3次入選國家隊，後備入替再次取得兩個入球，足見這位以速度及體能見稱的鋒極具潛能。

英格蘭曾經於82及84年連奪兩屆冠軍，然而自90年代開始成績下滑，對上兩屆更加在外圍賽出局。今次再闖進決賽周，外界均認為這支擁有大部份效力英超球會成員的國家隊，有機會在廿多年後再嘗冠軍滋味。英格蘭在外圍賽分組賽中，淘汰了摩爾多瓦及瑞士，繼而在附加賽以兩回合計3比0的成績擊敗德國，取得今次的決賽周資格。
季尾被曼城開除後，皮雅斯將可專心帶領英格蘭角逐這項賽事，在最後選出的23 人大軍名單中，共有3名球員從未入選，包括愛華頓前鋒占士禾漢、韋斯咸中場麥克盧保及熱刺門將艾恩域。至於骨幹球員中，包括了門將卡臣、中堅安頓費迪南及中場基蘭李察遜等，可惜在外圍賽表現出色的阿仙奴前鋒禾確特，因為受傷未能入選參加這次大賽，或多或少影響球隊的攻擊力。

大國腳在去年的世界盃奪標而回，加上AC米蘭在歐聯捧盃，意大利在國際球壇上搶盡風頭，且看21歲以下代表隊能否延續強勢在今次賽事中掄元，為國家帶來「帽子戲法」。意大利在外圍賽分組賽的表現未算突出，只能夠小勝實力一般的冰島及奧地利，於附加賽遇上在青年賽成績彪炳的西班牙，主場雖然打和，但作客卻以2 比1勇挫對手，因而取得決賽周一席位。曾經5度奪得這項賽事錦標的意大利，由前國腳卡沙拉基領軍，這位曾經效力拉素、車路士等球會的前鋒，與國家隊一樣採取較為穩守突擊的4-1-4-1戰術，以單箭頭配合一名攻擊中場爭取入球，後防則貫徹意大利足球的多人防守風格，藉此爭取打入最後4強的目標。

米高柏柏杜普路斯是捷克大軍名單中2名外流成員之一。司職前鋒的他，目前效力德甲球會利華古遜，亦曾經在03年外借到英超球會阿仙奴，但只曾上陣1次，到上季中終被當時利華古遜教練、前德國國腳禾拉帶到德甲球壇。不過，他在利華古遜同樣未有得到很多上陣機會，因而直接影響他在今次決賽周的比賽狀態，但教練史高派爾仍希望憑他在歐洲球壇比賽的經驗，協助國家隊面對眾強敵，爭取好成績。
