Spirited Vietnam hold strong Saudi Arabia 1-1

HANOI: Vietnam and Saudi Arabia lost further ground on Group C leaders Japan after a 1-1 draw at My Dinh National Stadium on Wednesday in the AFC Final Round for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
The home side took the lead in the 65th minute after Ibrahim Shrahili's attempted clearance was deflected by goalkeeper Waleed Ali into the Saudi net but substitute Naif Hazazi headed the sides level with Saudi Arabia's first goal of the final round 10 minutes from time.
The draw will do little good for either side though as they remain five points adrift of the Japanese and the all-important ticket to next year's Men's Olympic Football Tournament.
The Saudis had failed to register a goal in their first two matches of the final round and there was little to suggest that the situation would change in the opening 45 minutes which featured a lack of quality goalscoring chances.
Roared on by the home fans, the Vietnamese displayed plenty of energy and enthusiasm, allowing the Saudis little time to settle on the ball but creating very little themselves to trouble Waleed Ali.
Defender Mai Xuan Hop did let his enthusiasm get the better of himself in the 19th minute when he was fortunate to only receive a yellow card after launching himself into a shocking two-footed tackle on Motaz Al Mosa.
Abdullah Shuhail squandered the best Saudi chance of the first half as he beat the Vietnamese offside trap to run onto Ahmed Alfraidi's free kick only to put his effort wide.
Vietnam's lack of finishing was also apparent when Le Cong Vinh played a neat through ball that found Nguyen Anh Duc in acres of space on the right edge of the Saudi box. However, the Vietnamese forward rushed his effort and ended up with a tame shot that did little to trouble Waleed Ali.
Naif Hazazi came on at the break for the ineffective Yosef Al Salem and injected some life into the Saudi attack in a much more entertaining second half.
Nguyen Anh Duc put a free header wide for Vietname in the 50th minute while Hazazi went close for the visitors three minutes later, meeting a bouncing ball in the Vietnam box with a scissors kick that flew over the crossbar.
Hazazi wasted another effort shortly afterwards, firing hopelessly wide after gaining possession on the right edge of the box, but he was only denied by a brilliant save by Tran Duc Cuong on the hour, the Vietnam goalkeeper diving low to his right to stop a shot across his body.
Duc Cuong did even better in the 62nd minute, jumping to his left to push aside Alfraidi's free kick for a corner and that save appeared even more crucial when the home side took the lead in the 65th minute against the run of play.
Cong Vinh met a corner from the right with a header that was stopped on the line by Ibrahim Shrahili but flew right into the head of Waleed Ali, deflecting back into the Saudi net.
Vietnam could have extended their lead in the 76th minute when Nguyen Vu Phong's free kick from the left flank nearly caught out Waleed Ali.
But the Saudis would get back on level terms with 10 minute remaining as Abdullah Al Astaa's corner kick from the right was headed back across goal for Hazazi to run in for an unchallenged header that finally ended the Saudi goal drought.
The Middle Eastern side could count themselves fortunate to leave south east Asia with a point though as Cong Vinh squandered two breakaway opportunities in the closing minutes before Vu Phong's long range attempt in stoppage time rocked the crossbar.

Iraq dash DPR Korea’s hopes with a 2-0 victory

DOHA: Iraq held on to top spot in Group A on goal difference after claiming their second consecutive victory in the AFC Final Round for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games with a 2-0 win over 10-man DPR Korea on Wednesday.
Yahya Alwan's side dominated the entire game at Al Rayyan Stadium with Khaldoun Ibrahim opening the scoring midway through the first half before Ala'a Abdulzahra sealed the win after the interval.
The victory moved Iraq up to seven points, ahead of Australia on goal difference while DPR Korea, who had Jon Kwang-ik sent off late in the first half, suffered their third consecutive loss, all but ending their hopes of qualifying for next year’s Men’s Olympic Football Tournament.
Iraq controlled proceedings right from the opening whistle and took a deserved lead in the 21st minute when Khaldoun Ibrahim beat the DPR Korea offside trap before chipping the ball past goalkeeper Ri Myong-guk for the opening goal.
DPR Korea’s hopes of rescuing a point suffered a major blow in the 37th minute when they were reduced to 10 after Jon Kwang-ik was shown a straight red card by Qatari referee Abdulrahman Abdou for a bad tackle on Ali Abbas.
Iraq should have doubled the lead in the 61st minute when Nabeel Abbas crossed from the left flank to an unmarked Abbas but the 21-year-old midfielder sent his header wide.
Three minutes later, the Iraqis squandered another chance when Samer Saeed made his way into the area and went past Ri Kwang-chon before launching a fierce shot over the crossbar.
The second goal would finally arrive in the 69th minute when Karrar Jassim launched a quick attack down the left and fed the ball to Alaa Abdulzahra who found the far corner of the net for his third goal in two matches following his brace in the 5-0 win in Lebanon last Saturday.
Iraq should have increased their tally through substitute Mostafa Karim who beat the DPR Korea offside trap and shot wide in the 83rd minute.
The east Asian side had few efforts of note with their best opportunity falling to Ryang Myong-il who fired his shot from close range into the side netting in the 90th minute.
Substitute Halkard Mulla Mohammed, the younger brother of Iraq international Hawar Mulla Mohammed, nearly made it 3-0 right at the end as his shot went just wide of the left upright in the final action of the game.

Four teams advance to Caribbean Second Round
14.9.07 - Cuba, Grenada, Haiti and Jamaica all advanced to the Caribbean Second Round Qualification to the 2008 CONCACAF Under-23 Tournament after winning their respective first round groups on Thursday.
Group B: Eric Campbell and Eric Vernon scored two goals each, while Donovan Davis added another for group winner Jamaica (3-0-0, 9 Points) as they defeated the hosts, Aruba (0-3-0, 0 Points) by a score of 5:0 at the Complejo Deportivo Guillermo Trinidad in Oranjestad. In an earlier encounter, goals by Tavin Crump and Oral Roberts led Antigua & Barbuda (2-1-0, 6 Points) to a 2:1 triumph against Barbados (1-2-0, 3 Points).
Group C: Three goals by Roberto Linares Yalmacida and one each from Leonel Duarte, Armando Isidoro and Adonis Ramos guided the hosts, Cuba (3-0-0, 9 Points) to a 6:0 win against the Cayman Islands (0-2-1, 1 Point) at the Estadio Pedro Marrero in La Habana. The victory secured the cubanos first-place in group play and they have not allowed a goal in CONCACAF U-23 Qualification in 275 minutes. Meanwhile in the other group match in La Habana, Eloy Matos and Joshua Villalobos scored for Puerto Rico (2-1-0, 6 Points) in the 2:0 win over Bermuda (0-2-1, 1 Point).
Group D: Haiti (1-0-1, 4 Points) claimed the top spot in group play after defeating the hosts, St. Kitts & Nevis (0-1-1, 1 Point) 1:0 at the Warner Park in Basseterre. Reginald Veltentim scored the only goal of the match for the Haitians who earned the first win in the CONCACAF U-23 Qualification since they defeated St. Lucia, 2:1, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on 24 March 1991.
Group E: Goals by Henson Cuffie, Marcus Julien and Kwasi Paul helped Grenada (1-0-2, 5 Points) to a 3:3 draw against the hosts, St. Vincent & The Grenadines (1-0-2, 5 Points) at Victoria Park in Kingstown. The spice boyz finished ahead of the vincy heat for the first-place honours in the group on the most goals scored tiebreaker (nine – seven). In the other group encounter, Julian Wade scored twice for Dominica (1-2-0, 3 Points) in the 2:1 win over St. Lucia (0-1-2, 2 Points).
Cuba, Grenada, Haiti and Jamaica will join the Bahamas and Trinidad & Tobago in the Caribbean Second Round that consists of two three-team groups scheduled to play in October 2007. The top finishers in each triangular group will progress to the 2008 CONCACAF U-23 Final Round Tournament.
Elsewhere, the Men’s U-23 Central American Preliminary Qualification will have two groups of three with Panama hosting El Salvador and Honduras from 7-11 November, while Guatemala welcomes Costa Rica and Nicaragua from 14-18 November.
The winners of each triangular will advance to the CONCACAF Men’s U-23 Tournament along with two Caribbean teams, Canada, Mexico and USA with venue and dates to be announced. The two second-place finishers from each Central American Triangular will meet in a home-and-away playoff series with the winner also progressing to the CONCACAF U-23 Final Round Tournament, where two teams will qualify to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Cuba, Haiti post wins in Caribbean Second Round
10.10.07 - Cuba and Haiti posted wins on Tuesday over Trinidad & Tobago and Bahamas, respectively, during the Caribbean Second Round Groups, which is the qualification to the 2008 CONCACAF Under-23 Championship.
Scores by Leonel Duarte and Roberto Linares Yalmacida along with and own goal from soca warriors’ Marcelle Francois were the offence for Cuba (1-0-0, 3 Points) as they defeated the hosts, Trinidad & Tobago (0-1-0, 0 Points), 3:0, in the Group G opener at the Marvin Lee Stadium in Macoya. The leones del caribe have not allowed a goal in CONCACAF U-23 Qualification in 365 minutes.
In the Group H, Leonel Saint Preux and Alain Vubert scored two goals each to lead the hosts, Haiti (1-0-0, 3 Points) to a 6:0 victory over the Bahamas (0-1-0, 0 Points) at the Stade Silvio Cator in Port-au-Prince.
The Caribbean Second Round continues on Thursday (11 October), with Cuba taking on Grenada (0-0-0, 0 Points) in Group G action at the Marvin Lee Stadium, while in Group H play at the Stade Silvio Cator, the Bahamas faces Jamaica (0-0-0, 0 Points).
The two second round triangulars conclude on Saturday (13 October), when Trinidad & Tobago hosts Grenada in Macoya and Haiti greets Jamaica in Port-au-Prince.
The winners of each Caribbean Second Round Group will advance to the CONCACAF Men’s U-23 Championship along with three Central American teams, Canada, Mexico and USA with venue and dates to be announced. The CONCACAF U-23 Championship will qualify two teams to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Cuba progress to CONCACAF Final Round; Bahamas defeats Jamaica
12.10.07 - Cuba progressed to the Final Round of the 2008 CONCACAF Under-23 Championship after defeating Grenada and finishing first in the Caribbean Second Round Group G at the Marvin Lee Stadium in Macoya, Trinidad & Tobago on Thursday.
Roberto Linares Yalmacida opened the scoring for Cuba (2-0-0, 6 Points) in the 15th minute, but Lyndon Antoine leveled it for Grenada (0-1-0, 0 Points) in the 24th minute. The tying goal by the spice boyz was the first given up by the leones del caribe in the last 389 minutes played in CONCACAF U-23 Qualification.
Yalmacida then scored the game-winner in the 67th minute as Cuba advanced to the CONCACAF Final Round of the Men’s Olympic Games Qualification for the first time since 1984.
Elsewhere in the Caribbean Second Round on Thursday, the Bahamas (1-1-0, 3 Points) stunned Jamaica (0-1-0, 0 Points) with a 1:0 triumph in Group H action at the Stade Silvio Cator in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
After a scoreless first half, Lesly St. Fleur had the only goal of the match for the rake & scrape boys with six minutes remaining in the victory over the reggae boyz.
The Caribbean Second Round concludes on Saturday with Trinidad & Tobago (0-1-0, 0 Points) taking on Grenada in the Group G finale at the Marvin Lee Stadium, while Haiti (1-0-0, 3 Points) hosts Jamaica in Group H play at the Stade Silvio Cator.

Haiti secures place in CONCACAF Final Round; Grenada top Trinidad & Tobago
13.10.07 - Haiti secured a place for the first time in history to the Final Round of the 2008 CONCACAF Under-23 Championship after defeating visiting Jamaica and taking the first place in the Caribbean Second Round Group H at the Stade Silvio Cator in Port-au-Prince on Saturday.
Rudolph Austin gave Jamaica (0-2-0, 0 Points) the lead in the 19th minute but Haiti (2-0-0, 6 Points) got goals from Bridrece Azor and Fabrice Noel in the 48th and 76th minutes, respectively, for the 2:1 victory.
Elsewhere in the Caribbean Second Round on Saturday, two goals by Lyndon Antoine and another from Shane Rennie led Grenada (1-1-0, 3 Points) to a 3:2 win over the hosts, Trinidad & Tobago (0-2-0, 0 Points) in the Group G finale at the Marvin Lee Stadium in Macoya.

Korea Republic drop first points

DAMASCUS: Korea Republic dropped their first points in the AFC Final Round for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games following a goalless draw against Syria at Al Abbasiyyin Stadium on Wednesday.
The visitors were clearly the better side throughout the game and had several scoring chances but could not find the crucial goal that would have given them their fourth consecutive win in Group B.
Despite the draw, Korea remained at the top of the group with 10 points while Syria saw their faint hopes of qualifying for the Beijing Olympics come to an end despite claiming their second point in the group.
The game began at a slow pace and while the Koreans dominated the early proceedings, they failed to offer any significant threat on the Syrian goal in the first half-hour.
Former AFC Young Player of the Year Park Chu-young, who was playing his first match in the Olympic qualifiers since February, had the first real chance of the game when he fired a free kick from the edge of the area well over the cross-bar.
It proved to be the only real effort on goal in the opening half and things
didn't get much better after the break as Park Sung-hwa's side continued to exert most of the pressure.
They should have opened the scoring in the 67th minute when midfielder Lee Keun-ho beat the Syrian offside trap and had only the goalkeeper to beat only to see his effort turned aside by Ali Al Holami.
From the resulting corner, Lee put his header over the crossbar.
Park Chu-young had another free kick opportunity on 71 minutes but his powerful shot went past the left upright as the Koreans turned up the pressure in the closing minutes.
Syria had their first chance of the game in the 78th minute when substitute striker Hassan Delli fired a powerful volley from outside the area which was pushed over the crossbar by Korean goalkeeper Jung Sung-ryong.
Substitute Seo Dong-hyeon went close for the Koreans in the 80th minute with a header from a close range which flew over the crossbar and shortly afterwards, his shot from inside the six yard box was cleared off the goalline by defender Omar Hemidi.
Fellow substitute Lee Chung-yong had two clear chances in a minute as his free kick from 30 yards slammed against the left upright while a close-range shot attempt was saved by the Syrian goalkeeper.
The hosts could have stolen the three points as substitute Anad Osman fired a long range rocket which beat Jung Sung-Ryong but came back off the post.
The Koreans had their final chance to take the points in the third minute of stoppage time but failed to capitalize yet again as Lee Chung-Yong fired well over the crossbar.

Iraq held in Pyongyang stalemate

PYONGYANG: Iraq's Olympic qualification hopes were dealt a blow on
Wednesday as the 2004 semi-finalists were held to a goalless draw by DPR Korea at the Kim Il Syung Stadium in Pyongyang.
The draw sent the Iraqis a point clear at the top of Group A but they could be overhauled if Australia defeat Lebanon in Beirut later on Wednesday evening.
The point was the first for DPR Korea in the AFC Final Round for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games after three consecutive losses but the result ended any hope that they had of securing a place in China next year as they remain seven points behind the Iraqis with only two games to play.
There was little in the way of goalmouth action in a turgid first half
devoid of clear cut opportunities.
The Iraqis controlled much of the play but clearly missed the inspiration of the suspended Karrar Jassim as they struggled to find a way past the well-marshalled Korean defence.
The visitors were restricted to desperate long range attempts that did
little to trouble goalkeeper Ri Myong-guk while the home side failed to offer much themselves with Pak Nam-chol's 45th minute header, which sailed well over the crossbar, the closest thing to a goal attempt before the break.
DPR Korea had failed to score in their previous five Olympic qualifying matches but they showed far more urgency in the second half as they took the game to the group leaders.
On 54 minutes, they very nearly took the lead when An Chol-hyok's downward header bounced off the ground and onto the Iraqi crossbar with defender Dira Habeib clearing the ball before Jong Chol-min could pounce on the rebound.
The home side stepped up the pressure and had a penalty appeal turned down by Bangladeshi referee Tayab Shamsuzzaman two minutes later after a shot by An appeared to strike the arm of Mohammed Karem.
Jong should have done better in the 62nd minute when Kim Kuk-jin cut the ball back to him from the left byline but the DPR Korea forward's snapshot flew narrowly wide of the near post
Two minutes later, Jong took possession of the ball behind the Iraqi
backline after an excellent throughball but a poor first touch allowed
Khaldoon Mohammed to get back and make a goal-saving tackle.
Khaldoon was on hand again shortly afterwards to block a shot by substitute Kim Kyong-il 10 metres from goal. Kim managed to get to the ball as it ricocheted upwards but his weak header dribbled wide of the far post.
Having withstood the Korean barrage, the Iraqis went close to grabbing a winner 11 minutes from time when Ala'a Khashen's volley from the edge of the area was superbly stopped by a diving Ri Myong-guk.
Substitute Pak Chol-min had one final chance to win the game for the hosts in stoppage time but his shot from 20 metres flew well over the crossbar as DPR Korea saw their last remaining hopes of Olympic qualification evaporate.

Late penalty sinks Japan

DOHA: Majdi Siddiq converted a stoppage time penalty as Qatar came behind to beat Japan 2-1 on Wednesday to move to the top of Group C in the AFC Final Round for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Naoaki Aoyama gave the visitors the lead shortly before half-time but a cheeky back heel by substitute Hasan Al Haydos 17 minutes from time drew the sides level before Siddiq fired home from the spot to give the home side all three points.
Both teams have seven points and a goal difference of plus one but the Qataris lead the group by virtue of scoring a goal more than the Japanese.
The two teams showed plenty of attacking endeavour in an entertaining and open first half.
Koki Mizuno spurned a glorious early opportunity for the visitors, firing high over the Qatar crossbar after being played through by Tadanari Lee's through ball.
On 18 minutes, a Mizuno corner from the left found Lee in the crowded box but his effort was touched just wide of the far post.
The Qataris then launched a quick counter-attack down the left flank which saw Maaz Adam sending in a cross that flew dangerously across the face of the Japan goal.
The Qataris went close again shortly afterwards as Ali Afif's corner was hacked clear by Aoyama just before it could reach a lurking Bilal Mohammed and they also had a penalty appeal turned down by Uzbek referee Ravshan Irmatov after Afif was bundled over in the Japanese box by Aoyama.
Aoyama would be the cause of even greater grief for the Qataris in the 43rd minute when he put Japan ahead.
Goalkeeper Rajab Kassim came off his line in an attempt to cut out Mizuno's corner from the left but only succeeded in barging into Keisuke Honda, who deflected the ball into the path of a lurking Aoyama, who tucked the ball into the unguarded net from close range.
The Japanese could have put the game out of reach early in the second half as Yosuke Kashiwagi received a cutback on the edge of the box but fired well over the crossbar.
On the hour, Kashiwagi took the ball down to the right byline and drew Kassim off his line only to cut the ball back far too strongly for his teammates, who were waiting with intent on the edge of the six-yard box.
The Qataris grew in confidence as the half progressed and the Japanese had a fortunate escape when Mesaad Al Hamad's shot took a big deflection off a defender but flew right into the arms of goalkeeper Kaito Yamamoto.
Yamamoto did superbly to turn aside a free-kick by Al Hamad in the 76th minute but from the resulting corner, taken from the right by Waleed Jassim, Bilal Mohammed flicked a shot towards goal and Al Haydos helped the bal. into the net with a cheeky back heel from six yards out.
It was the first goal conceded by the Japanese in the final round after three consecutive clean sheets.
The two teams continued to slug it out in the closing minutes but the match appeared to be headed for a goalless draw until referee Irmatov pointed to the spot in the second minute of stoppage time after Masahiko Inoha controlled the ball with his right arm in the box.
Siddiq coolly tucked the ball into the lower right hand corner of the net, just out of Yamamoto's reach to spark wild celebrations from the home fans at the Al Sadd Stadium.

Bahrain claim third win

MANAMA: Bahrain closed to within a point of Group B leaders Korea Republic in the AFC Final Round qualifiers for the 2008 Beijing Olympics as goals by Jaycee Okwunwanne and Abdullah Omar gave them a 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan at Bahrain National Stadium on Wednesday.
Okwunwanne gave his side the lead just before the interval and Omar scored early in the second period to give Bahrain their third win in four matches as they moved up to nine points, one behind the Koreans, who were held to a goalless draw in Syria earlier in the day.
Having only managed a point from their first three games, Uzbekistan needed a win to keep alive their slim hopes of Olympic qualification and they started the match strongly, controlling the early play although they failed to offer a real threat on the Bahraini goal.
It was the home side that crafted the first real chance in the 24th minute when Abdulla Fadati advanced into the area and got away a shot that went just wide of the left upright.
Two minutes later, the Uzbeks responded with a weak shot from Aziz Ibragimov which didn't really trouble Bahrain goalkeeper Sayed Jaafar.
Bahrain could have opened the scoring in the 33rd as striker Ismaeel
Abdullatif failed to connect cleanly with a cross from the left by Abdullah Omar while at the other end, a free kick by Azizbek Haydarov was cleared was by Sayed Jaafar.
The hosts went close again in the 39th minute when Nigeria-born striker Okwunwanne beat the Uzbek offside trap and laid off a pass to Abdullatif, whose attempt went straight at Uzbek goalkeeper Aziz Ashurov.
However, the home side would break the deadlock just thirty seconds before the interval as Abdullatif went down the left flank and sent an inviting low cross towards Okwunwanne, who back-heeled the ball into the net to open the scoring.
Uzbekistan went into the second half determined to draw level and they
controlled the early play once again only to be hit by a sucker punch 10 minutes after the restart as the dangerous duo of Okwunwanne and Abdullatif combined effectively once again.
Okwunwanne broke down the left and crossed to an unmarked Abdullatif, who laid off the ball for an advancing Omar who fired a right-footed shot past Ashurov.
Bahrain nearly added a third in the 61st minute when Fatadi met a corner with a powerful header which beat Ashurov but was cleared off the goal-line.
The hosts gradually took their foot off the gas in the closing minutes but were able to maintain their lead as they kept up the pressure on group leaders Korea with two rounds of games remaining.

Australia under pressure after goalless draw with Lebanon

BEIRUT: Australia's hopes of qualifying for next summer's Olympic Games in Beijing suffered a blow as Graham Arnold's Olyroos were held to a 0-0 draw by Lebanon at the Beirut Municipal Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Despite dominating for much of the 90 minutes, the Australians were unable to breach the Lebanese defence and the draw puts them under pressure ahead of their next qualifier against group leaders Iraq on November 17.
Missing the A-League's leading scorer Bruce Djite, who is out due to injury, the Australians lacked a cutting edge and were unable to turn their significant possession into goals.
The Olyroos controlled the tempo of the game but Australia came away with little to show for their superiority as they struggled to find a way through a resolute Lebanon back line. As a result, Graham Arnold's team was left to try their luck from set pieces or from distance.
Nicky ward saw his seventh minute header palmed away by goalkeeper Hassan Mogneigh before Kristian Sarkies' shot was deflected wide.
However, it was Lebanon striker Akram Moghrabi who had the best goal scoring opportunity in the first quarter of the game when his turn and shot on the corner of the penalty area was just wide of Daniel Vukovic's left upright.
Mogneigh was again on hand to deny the Australians in the 27th minute when he pushed Mark Bridge's header to safety before Moghrabi went close again at the other end when he volleyed Jihad El Helwi's free kick just wide of the target.
Sarkies was then off target with his free kick before James Troisi blew a great chance to give the Olyroos the lead in first half injury time when he lifted the ball over the bar after a fine one-two with Bridge finally put him behind the Lebanese defence.
The Australians came out in determined mood in the second half, with Bridge seeing his 49th minute effort pushed away by Mogneigh while Troisi's shot was cleared off the line by Hussein Amine from the resultant corner.
Five minutes later Moghrabi looked set to give Lebanon the lead as the hosts hit hard on the break only for a last-ditch challenge from Adam D'Apuzzo to block the shot and leave Zhakaria Charara to fire into the side netting.
The Australians then contrived to create and miss a host of chances, with Sarkies among those sending his header just wide while, with the game deep into stoppage time, Bridge saw his attempt deflected wide of the target as Lebanon held on for a point. - PA Sport

Al Salem strikes twice to keep Saudis in hunt

DAMMAM: Saudi Arabia put their hopes of a place in Beijing at next year's Olympic Games back on track with a 2-0 win over Vietnam on Wednesday evening.
Following Japan's loss at the hands of Qatar, the Saudis are now within two points of top spot in Group C with two games remaining, including a trip to Japan to face Yasuharu Sorimachi's team in the final round of matches.
Substitute Yousef Mansour Al Salem came off the bench to give his side the lead 19 minutes into the second half after the Saudis had dominated against a Vietnam side missing star striker Le Cong Vinh.
And with the game deep into injury time, Al Salem doubled his side's advantage with a well taken penalty that gave Vietnam goalkeeper Tran Duc Cuong little chance.
With new coach Nasser Al Johar watching from the sidelines, the Saudis went all out in the opening stages as they attempted to use their physical superiority to rattle the Vietnamese.
Saleh Abdullah's delivery both from open play and set pieces was asking serious questions of the visitors' defence and it from his free kick in the fifth minute that Abdullah Juman Shuhail headed goalward, only for Duc Cuong to push the ball away.
Duc Cuong was on hand five minutes later to save his side again, this time steering Abdullah's attempt away from goal.
Vietnam weathered the initial storm but the Saudis always looked the more likely to score. A mix-up between Duc Cuong and defender Vo Nhat Tan almost allowed Naif Ahmed Hazazi to capitalise but his attempt at goal was deflected wide for a corner.
With 31 minutes on the clock, Duc Cuong saved his side again with another top class save, this time reacting quickly to push away Abdullah Nour's volley after Abdullah's lofted pass had caught the Vietnamese defence square.
Hazazi then sent a header just wide with seven minutes left in the half as Saudi Arabia continued to fire blanks.
The second period saw the Saudis start slowly but by the 64th minute they finally took the lead when Abdullah outpaced the Vietnam defence before sending over a low cross from the right side of the penalty area that Al Salem pushed home from close range.
Thirteen minutes later Al Salem should have doubled his side's advantage and made all three points safe when he played himself in on Duc Cuong's goal, only to push his shot wide of the Vietnamese goalkeeper's left upright.
But with the game deep into injury time, the Saudis were awarded a penalty and Al Salem made no mistake, sending the ball to Duc Cuong's right to give his side the margin of victory they deserved.

Panama open Central American Qualification with victory
8.11.07 - Panama opened the first of two Central American Qualification Groups to the 2008 CONCACAF Under-23 Championship, with a 2:1 victory over El Salvador at the Estadio Rod Carew in Panama City on Wednesday.
After a scoreless first half, Panama took a 2:0 lead with goals by Gabriel Torres and Nelson Barahona in the 53rd and 80th minutes, respectively. Josue Flores got El Salvador on the board in the final minute of play, but Panama held on for the win.
The first Central American Triangular continues at the Estadio Rod Carew on Friday (9 November) when El Salvador takes on Honduras. The event concludes two days later in Panama City as Panama hosts Honduras.
Meanwhile, Guatemala City’s Estadio Mateo Flores will be staging the other group matches that along with the home team have Costa Rica and Nicaragua competing from 14-18 November.

Honduras progressed to the 2008 CONCACAF Under-23 Championship after holding the hosts Panama to a 1:1 draw and winning the first (of two) Central American Qualification Group held at the Estadio Rod Carew in Panama City on Sunday.
After Honduras took the lead in the 28th minute with a goal by Jefferson Bernárdez, Edwin Aguilar tied it for Panama in the 67th minute, but it was the Catrachos claimed first place in the group ahead of the Canaleros on goal difference (+3 to +1).

Guatemala defeat Nicaragua in Central American Qualification
15.11.07 - Guatemala began the second Central American Qualification Group of the 2008 CONCACAF Under-23 Championship with a 3:0 triumph over visiting Nicaragua at the Estadio Mateo Flores in Guatemala City.

Álvaro Guerrero and Brayan Ruiz each scored three goals to lead the Ticos to the victory over the Pinoleros. The nine goals were the most scored by Costa Rica in a CONCACAF U-23 Qualification match since they defeated visiting Belize, 15:0, in Heredia on 13 September 2003.

GOSFORD,Australia: Australia took a giant step towards qualifying for the 2008Beijing Olympics when they scored a 2-0 win over Iraq in front of 13,088 spectators at Bluetongue Stadium on Saturday night.
The Olyroos now lead the Group A final qualifying round and a win or adraw against DPR Korea in Pyongyang on Wednesday in their finalqualifier will see them into their sixth successive Olympic games.
Despite it being an Australian home game Iraqi fans outnumbered the Olyroos supporters.
But they were silenced by goals from Olyroos defenders Adrian Leijerand Mark Milligan in the 19th and 58th minutes respectively.
Leijer's goal came when Iraq failed to clear the ball from a KristianSarkies free-kick and in the ensuing goal mouth scramble NikolaiTopor-Stanley's shot was deflected out to an unmarked Leijer on theleft who fired it past Iraqi keeper Mohammed Kadhum.
The second goal came from a perfectly executed Sarkies free kick thatwas met by a flying Milligan on the far corner of the penalty box, whoput a powerful header into the net.
The Olyroos put early pressure on Iraq especially down the left through Newcastle United forward James Troisi.
In the eighth minute Triosi tore down the centre towards goal beforecutting the ball left to Ruben Zadkovich who had a point blank shotfrom left of the goal but could not steer it past Kadhum.
Trying to get back on equal terms Iraq piled on the pressure late in the first half.
Their best chance came in the 42nd minute when Samer Mujbel beatTopor-Stanley down the right side and from an acute angle close to thegoal line struck a powerful shot that Australian goalkeeper DannyVukovic propelled upwards before Trent McClenahan cleared off the line.
Iraq had another chance in the 45th minute when Karrar Muhamed turnedon the edge of the box but his shot lacked power and presented Vukovicwith an easy save.
Australia hung on to go to the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.
But they were again under pressure early in the second half. In the 47thminute Muhamed was trapped in the corner by two defenders but showedsome nice footwork to put in a cross to Mostfa Abdulla whose shot wasjust saved by Vukovic.
A Sarkies free kick met the head of Milligan in the 53rd minute onlyfor the ball to be blocked by the back of an Iraqi defender. It proveda rehearsal of the goal that followed five minutes later.
In the 72nd minute Topor-Stanley almost scored an own goal but his clearing shot went just left of goal.
The Iraqis were urged on by their huge group of supporters but theyended the game unable to score and they now need to down Lebanon intheir final qualifier while hoping the Australians lose in Pyongyang toprogress to Beijing next year.
Australian coach Graham Arnold said he experienced a sense of revenge.
"It was payback for me." Arnold said. "We copped a 3-1 loss to Iraq inthe Asian Cup and they beat us in the quarter finals of the Olympics.
"But the job isn't over. I congratulated the boys on a greatperformance but tomorrow we head to DPR Korea where we play onartificial grass in zero degrees."
The Olyroos will prepare for the game in Pyongyang by training in Beijing for two days on an artificial pitch.
Arnold said the key to his team's success in its first Asian Olympicqualifying campaign has been adapting to an Asian style of football andplaying with discipline.
"I've tried to teach these boys how to play Asian football," Arnold."If you don't start playing the way they play it is very difficult."
Arnold paid credit to the quality of the opposition and said it's a proud moment to defeat such a strong team.
"They're an outstanding side and you don't have seven players from thesquad that won the Asian Cup and not be a good side," Arnold said.
Arnold said one of the challenges of his side had been to try and matchthe desire and commitment that the Iraqi team plays with.
"The negativity in the country I believe has brought their sportingteams and their country closer together," Arnold said. "We saw at theAsian Cup their commitment, work rate and team spirit was second tonone."

TASHKENT:Korea Republic maintained their unbeaten record in the AFC Final Roundfor the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games but did little to help theirqualification hopes as they were held to a goalless draw by Uzbekistanat Army Stadium in Tashkent on Saturday.
The Koreans have 11 points from five games and temporarily movedtwo points clear at the top of Group B. However, they could findthemselves in second place if Bahrain defeat Syria in Manama later onSaturday.
The home side had lost all three previous meetings with theKoreans this year and managed only a single point from their first fourgames in the final round. But they enjoyed the majority of the chancesin a dull encounter with Aziz Ibragimov forcing an excellent save outof goalkeeper Jung Sung-ryong with a close range effort in the firsthalf.
However, the Koreans very nearly stole all three points when ParkChu-young's goal-bound effort was headed clear by defender TimurYafarov 10 minutes from time.
The opening minutes were uneventful and the first chance onlyarrived in the 17th minute when Uzbekistan goalkeeper Aziz Ashurovsprawled low to his left to keep out a low shot by former AFC YoungPlayer of the Year Park Chu-young.
A minute later, a long ball found its way to Lee Keun-ho, who gotbehind the last Uzbek defender but spurned the opening as he blazedover from eight yards out.
The Uzbeks then missed an excellent opportunity of their ownshortly afterwards as Shavkat Salomov cut the ball back from the rightby-line into the Korean six-yard box, where an unmarked Aziz Ibragimovfired a first-time shot on target only to see his effort stopped atpoint blank range by Jung Sung-ryong.
On 25 minutes, the hosts went close again when Marat Bikmaev's lowball into the box was just inches in front of the charging Salomov.
Salomov was a lively presence up front for the central Asians inthe first half and five minutes before the break, he took the ball pastKim Jin-kyu to the left byline and crossed into the box, whereIbragimov had peeled away from his marker but put a free header wide.
The Uzbeks continued to create the better chances at the start ofthe second half with both Bikmaev and Anzur Ismailov forcing Jung intospawling saves.
But as the half progressed, play became scrappy as both teams struggled to create chances on the bumpy pitch.
Park Chu-young squandered an excellent opportunity in the 79thminute when his free-kick from 20 metres flew well over the crossbar.
But the FC Seoul striker very nearly atoned for that a minutelater. His initial shot from 25 metres was well saved by Ashurov, whodid well to also stop Shin Young-rok's follow-up.
With Ashurov stranded off his goalline, the ball broke once againto Park whose first-time effort was brilliantly cleared off the line bythe head of Yafarov.
The home side were reduced to 10 men four minutes from time when Bahrom
Yuldsahev became the fourth Uzbek player to be sent off in thefinal round when he was shown his second yellow card of the match for afoul on Kim Chang-soo.
But the Koreans failed to make their extra man count in the closingminutes with their best chance falling to Kim Seung-yong, whose shotfrom a narrow angle was kept out by Ashurov's legs.
