Could Sami Fin
-ish up a Mag?
And next in the frame for the position of defensive recruit appears to be Liverpool's Finnish stopper Sami Hyypia.
It's known that Souness was watching a possible transfer target in one of Wednesday's Champs League qualifiers, 31 year-old Hyypia completing 90 minutes against Welsh side TNS at Wrexham that night.
But while the reds continue to be linked with moves for defenders, Hyppia looks to be a key part of Rafa Benitez's plans - at least at present.
In the wake of their Champions League final victory, Liverpool confirmed that a new deal was in the offing for Hyypia, who moved from his native Finland to Anfield in 1999.
Like a number of other potential deals therefore, any interest we have may have in the player is dependent on other transfer moves - an inevitable but vastly frustrating situation for Souness & Co.
Were Hyypia to end up on Tyneside, it would bridge a gap of over a decade since he briefly trained with Newcastle during a pre-season tour of Scandinavia, before moving on to Dutch side Willem II when we failed to offer him a contract. |
