Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton faces being sent home from the club's pre-season tour to Thailand in disgrace after becoming involved in an altercation with a 15-year-old Everton fan at the team's hotel.
The incident happened in the bar at the Bangkok hotel where the team are staying during the FA Premier League Asia Trophy and occurred in the early hours of Friday morning after the City players returned from spending the evening at a Thai restaurant.
Barton is believed to have reacted to comments made by the 15-year-old before team-mate Richard Dunne stepped in as peace maker, prompting Barton to round on his club captain and both players had to be pulled apart.
'We are investigating an incident which took place in the hotel bar in the early hours of Friday morning which primarily involved Joey Barton,' said City's Head of Communications Paul Tyrrell. 'Our inquiries are continuing into the events.
'We are also aware that Richard Dunne had some part in what happened but Stuart Pearce has made it clear that Richard behaved properly and appropriately throughout.
'As this is a disciplinary process for which the club have formal guidelines, we have informed the chairman and chief executive who have started the process. Our inquiries here in Thailand are continuing. We have interviewed a number of people who witnessed the incident and will continue the investigation.
'The manager has already expressed his distaste for what we believe happened and we will leave no stone unturned to find out the whole truth of what went on.'
Neither player was due to feature in Saturday's game against Everton at Bangkok's Rajamangala Stadium as they played in the penalty shoot-out defeat to Bolton on Wednesday and both have been spoken to about the incident by Pearce.
Pearce will speak with club chairman John Wardle this afternoon to discuss what action will be taken against the 22-year-old, who has a troubled track record.
In December Barton was fined six weeks' wages - two of which were suspended - after stubbing a lit cigar into the face of former reserve team player Jamie Tandy during a Christmas party.
The suspended portion of that punishment will now almost certainly come into force in addition to any further sanction handed out by the club. |
