Inter fail in defender swoop

The transfer window has closed and Inter have been left with a void at right-back following an injury to Javier Zanetti.

The Argentine international was sidelined for at least 40 days on Sunday with a thigh problem, forcing his club to look for some last minute cover on the market.

Parma’s Daniele Bonera (pictured) and David Jemmali of Bordeaux were targeted but neither player joined the San Siro outfit.

Inter’s hopes of landing the Italian international were dashed at about midday on Wednesday.

The San Siro side offered Parma around £575,000 in order to land Bonera on a one-year loan, but the Tardini outfit refused.

Nerazzurri boss Roberto Mancini will now be forced to play with Jose Ze Maria at right-back, even if he could use centre-back Ivan Cordoba in that position in an emergency.

Lazio’s Massimo Oddo and Michel Salgado of Real Madrid were also names linked with the giants over the summer.

However, Lazio insist they never considered his sale. "Nobody asked me for Oddo," said chief Claudio Lotito.

Meanwhile, Salgado says he thought he would be moving to Turin. "I was waiting for a call from Juventus," he told the Marca newspaper. "Real offered me to them on loan."

Why Inter missed out on Jemmali… Thursday 1 September, 2005

Inter failed to sign Bordeaux right-back David Jemmali on Wednesday because the player was in training when the Italian outfit called!

The 30-year-old was targeted by the Serie A side as they looked for a temporary replacement for the injured Javier Zanetti.

But the Moroccan-born player was unable to discuss the move because he was training when the call came through, and the transfer market in Italy closed at 7pm on Wednesday, as opposed to midnight in France.

"It’s just incredible," said the Bordeaux stalwart. "It’s not some little village in the south of France that contacted me. It’s Inter! A big club!

"Just after 7pm - following training - I had my agent on the phone. He told me that while I was training Inter had made contact and were very interested in signing me.

"Unfortunately, we weren’t able to talk about it at the time."

Bordeaux President Jean-Louis Triaud confirmed that the rumour had reached his office.

"No one from Inter contacted me," he said. "But it’s true that around 6pm I did hear something on the grapevine to the effect that David could interest Inter.

"At any rate, I’m very happy he’s staying here."

Jemmali, who has been at Bordeaux since 1997, was not overly disappointed at missing out on the move.

"I don’t have any regrets," he said. "Bordeaux’s a club that I love and I’m more than happy here."
