TASHKENT – A brace from substitute Sham Kwok-keung saw Hong Kong come from behind to salvage a point against an Uzbekistan side that had taken a two-goal lead 35 minutes into their AFC Asian Cup 2007 Group F qualifier in Tashkent on Wednesday.
Uzbekistan went ahead in the 17th minute when Dynamo Kiev striker Maxim Shatskikh laid the ball into the path of last season’s league top scorer Anvar Soliev who swept it past keeper Fan Chun-yip.
Shatskikh doubled the Uzbeks advantage ten minutes before the interval when he collected Server Djeparov’s throw in, beat three defenders and fired the ball into the corner of the Hong Kong net as the home side looked to be well in control of the match.
Despite having a two-goal cushion, Uzbekistan coach Valeri Nepomniatchi opted to bring on a third striker, Alexander Geynrikh, for the second half but it was a move that was to backfire on the man who led Cameroon to the quarter-finals of the 1990 World Cup.
Hong Kong had failed to create a scoring chance of note in the first half and it was perhaps this lack of action that saw Uzbekistan’s giant goalkeeper Evgene Safonov – who was captaining the side for the first time – beaten from 30 yards out by substitute Sham Kwok-kueng.
In response to the goal and an injury to Soliev, Nepomniatchi brought on Ulugbek Bakaev, who hadn’t played for his country since September 2001, and the Kazakhstan-based defender almost made an impact at the other end of the pitch only for his weak shot to prevent him from making a goal scoring return.
Hong Kong had been inspired by Sham’s goal and in the 79th minute Chu Siu-kei headed over the two meter tall Safonov only for the Arsor Aliqulov to be in the right place at the right time to clear the danger.
But the visitors did get the equaliser with three minutes left to play when Sham capitalised on a mistake in the Uzbek defence and came out victorious when he went one-on-one with Safonov.
The draw put both teams on four points each with the two sides meeting again in Hong Kong on September 6 as they look to catch up on runaway leaders Qatar who have a maximum nine points from three matches. |
