• Mourinho 'happy' with gap
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho praised his side's performance in the goalless draw at Aston Villa and believes Manchester United have failed to take advantage of the Premiership champions' recent poor run of results.
Mourinho insisted he was 'happy' being just six points behind the Red Devils after the completion of the festive programme.
Chelsea have been without captain John Terry and goalkeeper Petr Cech but Mourinho is optimistic the pair will return to action sooner rather than later with his skipper pencilled in to play in the next Barclays Premiership game with Wigan in 11 days' time.
Mourinho had been critical of his players following Saturday's 2-2 draw with Fulham but was happy with the way they performed at Villa Park.
He said: 'I was critical at the weekend but tonight I am not disappointed. I am happy because we played as a team. We fought as a team and we overcame our difficulties.
'We defended well and I think the only thing we didn't do was score a goal and deservedly win the game. So I am happy.
'In my opinion, Manchester United did not take advantage of our bad moments. They could have done better.
'They didn't take their opportunity yesterday when they drew at Newcastle, which was good for us because I knew the maximum we could go behind them was seven points.
'I'm happy just to be six points behind. In the past, we have been 11 or 12 points clear and killed things off by Christmas.
'Manchester United have dropped five points at West Ham and Newcastle recently and the gap could have been bigger.
'Now we look forward to the second half of the season when we should have some people back pretty quickly.
'John Terry should be available for the next Premiership game with Wigan and Petr Cech and Arjen Robben for the game after that.'
Mourinho paid tribute to Villa's resolve as they put an end to a run of four successive defeats.
He said: 'We were the better team but the opposition was difficult and they defended well. They fought well and were well organised defensively but created nothing in attack.'
Villa manager Martin O'Neill was pleased to have 'stopped the rot' after Villa had slipped into the bottom half of the table during a run without a win which has now been extended to 10 games.
He said: 'We had suffered four successive defeats before this game and I was delighted with the attitude of the players. We put our heart and soul into the game and got something from it.
'We have been unable to achieve that in recent weeks despite playing well in some games and it is good to have stopped the rot.
'Chelsea are always capable of scoring and, in my opinion, Didier Drogba is currently the best centre forward in Europe.
'He is a handful for every minute of the game and our two centre halves had to be watchful throughout.
'Chelsea are a brilliant side and will be disappointed not to have won, but we did really well.'
