NEW YORK -- Isiah Thomas has shown enough "evident progress" to earn a multiyear contract extension, several New York-area newspapers reported Monday.
The New York Times, citing a person "briefed on the matter," says Thomas will sign the new deal to remain both team president and head coach on Monday. The Knicks are 29-34, but are in the hunt for their first playoff berth since 2004.
The Knicks won 23 games last year under Larry Brown, who was later fired.
A spokesman for Madison Square Garden said that Knicks owner James Dolan will meet with reporters on Monday morning. He is expected to announce Thomas' extension during that meeting.
No terms of Thomas' reported extention were cited. He is the Knicks' fifth head coach since Jeff van Gundy resigned in Dec. 2001.

Alan Henderson could be returning to the 76ers.
President/general manager Billy King won't say it, but that is apparently the plan.
The Sixers sent the backup big man to the Utah Jazz just before the NBA trading deadline to bring their payroll below the league's luxury-tax trigger-point. In the deal, the Sixers sent along sufficient cash to cover the remainder of Henderson's salary. The Jazz subsequently waived him.
The Sixers, left with just 12 players on their roster, one below the minimum league requirement, added forward Louis Amundson Thursday on a 10-day contract. They could not bring Henderson back until March 24, 30 days after the trade. [READ]
