Reds scoop awards double


Sir Alex Ferguson and Ryan Giggs have picked up Premiership monthly awards for the second time this season.

The United boss has been named Manager of the Month for February, while Giggs, who made his 700th appearance against Liverpool at Anfield, picked up the Player of the Month award.

United won all three Premiership fixtures last month, scoring eight goals and maintaining a commanding position at the top of the table.

It's the second time the pair have won joint awards this campaign, having both picked up the accolades in August 2006.

Giggs scored the final goal in United's 4-0 trouncing of Tottenham, produced a fine display against Charlton in the 2-0 home win, before his left-footed volley in the late 2-1 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Not for ten years has a player and manager scooped both monthly awards twice in the same season – the last pair being Liverpool duo Roy Evans and Robbie Fowler in December 1995 and January 1996.

Rio fit for Trotters test


Rio Ferdinand has been passed fit to face Bolton Wanderers in Saturday's Premiership encounter at Old Trafford.

The Sun had reported on Friday morning that the England centre-back would be out of action until the end of March after breaking a rib against Middlesbrough last weekend.

However, Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed at his weekly press briefing that Ferdinand had only suffered bruising at The Riverside Stadium, and is fit to face Sam Allardyce's side.

"I gave you in the bulletin on Tuesday exactly what is wrong with him, but some choose, through their own absurdity, to keep talking about a cracked rib that's not there," he said.

"So, he's okay and there's nothing wrong with him. The update from last week's squad is that we have only got Henrik Larsson missing, everyone else is fit.

"Patrice Evra is also fit, which gives us a reasonable squad to face the game tomorrow. It's a marvellously important game for us."

Coming up against old friend Allardyce, Sir Alex is well aware that United will be given a stern test by the physically imposing Trotters.

"I look forward to it," he said. "Sam Allardyce has done a fantastic job. I know it's a difficult game, they've got their own desire, too, and ambitions to get in the Uefa Cup placings, so it should be a good open match.

"The confidence, and the performance, of last week, particularly in the first half against Middlesbrough, was the kind of game I want to see us playing now."

Anelka tips Reds for the title

Bolton striker Nicolas Anelka believes United will win the the Premiership this season, but has warned the Reds that they will have to fight for three valuable points on Saturday.

The French forward praised the style with which Sir Alex Ferguson's side have reached such a commanding position with the run-in of games down to single figures.

"It's going to be a tough game, because United are on really good form and they are playing very well at the moment," he told United Review. "They have top players, like Rooney and Ronaldo, and I don’t think anyone will catch them in the Premier League this season.

United will be without some key players against Bolton, including Paul Scholes, who serves out the second match of a three-game ban, and injured trio Louis Saha, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Darren Fletcher.

Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, who were rested for the midweek Jubilee Charity Match, are set to return to the centre of defence, but Anelka says they will be in for a busy afternoon.

“Big teams like United do not enjoy playing against us because we give them no time to settle on the ball,” he said, now fully integrated into Sam Allardyce’s approach at the Reebok. “We still have to play Chelsea after Manchester United and that is going to be very hard to get a result. But anything is possible at Bolton."

MANCHESTER United star Darren Fletcher escaped unhurt after crashing in his ￡63,000 car just months after passing his driving test.

The Scottish international was driving his black Range Rover Sport HST Sport, near the club's Carrington training complex when it was in collision with another car.

An ambulance was called for the 27-year-old driver of the other vehicle, a red Audi A3 Quattro.

He suffered minor injuries to his ribs and was taken to Trafford General Hospital and released after treatment. Police are expected to speak with both drivers.
