Ferguson unconcerned by injuries

Sir Alex Ferguson insists he is not worried by Manchester United's lengthy injury list ahead of the Champions League first leg against AC Milan.

"All the big players are available. The only problem I have is maybe having an adequate bench, but I'm happy with the squad I've got," said the United boss.

"Obviously you miss players like Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville in big matches but the spirit is good.

"We should expect a very good performance with the players we have."
As well as Ferdinand and Neville, United are without Nemanja Vidic, Mikael Silvestre, Craig Cathcart, Louis Saha, Ji-Sung Park and Kieran Richardson (hamstring).

Patrice Evra is only likely to be fit enough to make the bench, which could also feature the likes of Chris Eagles, Fang Zhou Dong, Kieran Lee and Michael Barnes.

United beat Roma 7-1 in their last Champions League match at Old Trafford, but while Ferguson says he does not expect a repeat against AC Milan, he is hopeful of a victory.

"At this level, with the players we have, there is always going to be expectation," he said.

"The desire of the players is to reach a higher level. The quality of the opposition and the importance of the occasion demand the best performance.
"The performance in the last round was very, very good and that must give the players confidence.

"They haven't done much wrong this season. The team spirit has got better because the group is getting to know each other.

"I don't have any fears about it. I see the mood in the camp and it pleases me.

"Yes, we have concerns about one or two injuries, but the important players are playing and it's good to have them."

AC Milan have only one injury worry, over keeper Dida, and manager Carlo Ancelotti was able to rest his key players on Saturday.

"We arrive in perfect condition, relaxed and convinced," said Ancelotti.

"They have some problems, but in games like these everything is solvable with great determination and concentration."

Reds wary of Milan trio

Sir Alex Ferguson heaped praise on AC Milan's midfielders ahead of tomorrow night's Champions League semi final first leg.

The United boss tipped Brazilian playmaker Kaka and Italian internationals Gennaro Gattuso and Andrea Pirlo as ones to watch in a Milan side noted for its slick, attacking football.

"Kaka is a very talented player and he has good movement, which brings him into different positions in the field," Sir Alex said. "We have to pay particular attention to him."

He refused to comment on Gennaro Gattuso's claim that United had tried to secure the World Cup winner when he left Rangers, but did admit the 29-year-old was an "excellent footballer".

"He is a player we have always admired. He's matured very well at AC Milan in the last two or three years. When he was younger he was more aggressive, but now he is far more mature in his game."

Sir Alex also rubbished suggestions from Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez that 39-year-old Paolo Maldini would mark United ace Cristiano Ronaldo.

"I watched Milan's game against Bayern Munich and he is the master of getting through 90 minutes and not tackling anyone. He is a great player, but he won't be playing against Ronaldo on Tuesday.

"Sometimes I look at my own team and I wish we had more experience in certain situations. But then at other times I get encouraged by the hope in the future of our young players. Maldini leaves a legacy, but players like Ronaldo and Rooney give you a future."

The Reds' boss described Maldini as one of his favourite

European players of the last 15 years, a sentiment echoed by United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

"Maldini is a proper legend and a true professional," the Norwegian marksman said. "He's an example for everyone to follow and it's enjoyable to play against him because you know you're playing against a part of football history."

BENITEZ: FORGET PAST, LET'S MAKE HISTORY
Jimmy Rice 23 April 2007
Rafa Benitez has told his players to forget about their historic triumph over Chelsea in 2005 and get on with making more history.
Liverpool are meeting Jose Mourinho's men in the Champions League semi-final for the second time in three seasons.

The draw has brought back memories of Luis Garcia's famous goal which took the Reds to Istanbul, but Benitez refuses to be drawn on past glories.

"It's history, it's gone," said the Spaniard, "If Chelsea really want to argue about the goal, then we will argue it should have been a penalty and a red card, but it is better to look ahead.

"The history the two clubs will create in the next two meetings is more important than what happened in the past."

Two years ago, Liverpool travelled home from the first-leg at Stamford Bridge on the back of a goalless draw.

But while Benitez predicts a similarly tight encounter on Wednesday, the Anfield boss insists that, this time around, he'll send his side out looking for goals.

He said: "I don't think there will be many goals in the tie. Chelsea have a very good defence and concede fewer goals now than we do.

"But 0-0 away from home is not necessarily a good result; it is better to try and score a goal. We scored goals in Barcelona and our idea is to score at Stamford Bridge and hopefully to win.

"I think it will be a tight game, though. It tends to be like that when you know you have another game to come."

As is always the case when Liverpool meet Chelsea, much is being made of the tactical battle between the two managers.

However, Benitez is keen to stress that players win matches, not coaches.

"It is not about Jose and me; it is better to talk about Gerrard against Lampard," he said. "Managers can prepare plans, but at the end of the day games come down to players.

"What happens on the pitch decides things, not what managers want to happen. I remember Eidur Gudjohnsen had a good chance to equalise late in the game at Anfield. If he had scored it would have been very different.

"Chelsea would have won, Liverpool would not have been in Istanbul and no one would be complimenting me on my tactics."

While London and Liverpool pit their wits for the chance to be represented in the final, the other semi sees Man Utd take on Italian giants AC Milan.

For Benitez, the presence of three English sides as the competition reaches its finale is proof the Premiership is currently to best league in the world.

"I'm not overlooking Milan, because they are a team with a lot of quality and experience and they are still in with a good chance in the Champions League," said the 47-year-old.

"But if you are comparing league with league, I think the English league might be the strongest around right now. Maybe in only one year things will change, but I know the Spanish league very well and I know the English league. I think at this moment England is a little better.

"Obviously there are some very good teams in Spain, but generally the competition is stronger in this country.

"I have been very impressed with Chelsea this season, the way they have played and the way they have kept the pressure on Manchester United.

"For me, United have been almost perfect this season; they have been fantastic, but Chelsea have been very close and that says a lot. We know we are in for a tough game, but I think we are a better team now than two years ago."

Home comfort for Rafa in Euro semi-final

Rafael Benitez believes his Liverpool side will have the upper hand in their Champions League semi-final with Chelsea because the second-leg is at Anfield.

That will rekindle memories of the momentous clash between the pair two seasons ago when Liverpool won with a disputed Luis Garcia goal before heading off to Istanbul where they beat AC Milan in the final.

Now, once again, Liverpool must go to Stamford Bridge for the first-leg, and Benitez said: 'They may not accept what happened here two years ago, but they cannot change things now.

'We are pleased we will play the second-leg at Anfield. If we can do something at Stamford Bridge, maybe we will then have the advantage.

'They know that. But playing counter-attack like they did in Valencia shows how dangerous they are in away games.

'Now it's Chelsea again, they know us and we know them very well. From our point of view it is positive that we are in another semi-final, and to see three English teams at this stage shows just how strong the Premier League is.

'It is really important for the Premier League to show Europe how strong we are, it is the best league in Europe at this moment.'

Benitez revealed that striker Craig Bellamy will have a scan on an injured right knee on Thursday and could be out for a fortnight.

That will make it touch and go whether the Welshman is fit for the first leg with Chelsea on May 25.

By then, the war of words and mind games between Benitez and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho will be in full swing.

Benitez's Liverpool have been thrown into another massive showdown with Chelsea in the semi-finals of the Champions League, after the Anfield men completed the task of beating PSV Eindhoven 4-0 on aggregate in the last eight.

Chelsea had reached the last four and a likely showdown with Liverpool 24 hours earlier by winning 2-1 away to Valencia, Benitez's former club.

And immediately Mourinho claimed that Liverpool will have it easy because they are only chasing one trophy at this stage of the season.

But Benitez was quick to counter, saying: 'That is what they want. They must be there and they must compete for every competition, that is their aim.'

And Benitez was equally prepared to explain the frosty relationship he now has with Mourinho, which has involved a trend of not shaking hands after matches this term between the clubs.

Benitez said: 'We were good friends until we (Liverpool) started winning, then he started changing his mind.

'It is the same with all the managers of the top sides. He has very good relationships with managers of teams that normally he beats.

'Then he started fighting with the managers of the top sides. He has already started it with us, yesterday!'

But Benitez was predictably confident Liverpool can repeat the semi-final success they achieved over Chelsea two seasons ago.

He said: 'Always as a manager you must be confident your team can win, and any Liverpool team will always be confident.

'But we know Chelsea are a very good team, in the last five years they have spent big money on players and they have a very good squad.

'They will be tough. They have spent money for five years, they are in other semi-finals and chasing trophies, that is what they want and have prepared for. Yes we only have one trophy to go for, but they would not want to change what they are doing now.'

Eindhoven boss Ronald Koeman also accepted the dominance of English football.

He said: 'It has been a great season for English clubs - Chelsea, Manchester United and now Liverpool in the semi-finals.

'This demonstrates how strong their league is. But they have the money, the best players and the best coaches.'

On his own club's performance in a 1-0 defeat, following the 3-0 mauling they suffered in the first-leg, Koeman said: 'We deserved more for the way we played.

'We were disciplined and organised. But the referee did not help in sending off Dirk Marcellis.

'It was barely a yellow card. When you make a decision like that you show you do not know football.'

UEFA send top ref Merk to Chelsea-Liverpool semi

UEFA have appointed one of their top referees to take charge of the first leg of Chelsea's Champions League semi-final against Liverpool.

Markus Merk will be the man in the middle at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday in a repeat of the controversial last-four clash in 2005.

On that occasion, Luis Garcia scored a second-leg winner which referee Lubos Michel allowed to stand, although replays could not prove the ball went over the line before Chelsea cleared.

Merk, who is a dentist by trade, has established himself as one of the best referees in Europe and has featured in World Cups.

The German will be in the spotlight as Jose Mourinho has accused referees of favouring other clubs following a weekend where they were denied a penalty at Newcastle with the Chelsea boss claiming it was 'forbidden' to award penalties against Manchester United.

Their fixtures with Liverpool - there have been 13 since Mourinho was appointed - have been eventful matches.

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso had his foot broken in a tackle by Frank Lampard in 2005 while the Spain midfielder was suspended for the Champions League semi-final second leg later that season.
