Shevchenko to miss Anfield trip

Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko has been ruled out of tomorrow's Champions League semi-final second leg at Liverpool.

The Ukraine international has not travelled with the squad and joins Ricardo Carvalho and Michael Ballack on the sidelines.

However, Arjen Robben is included in the squad after making a quicker-than-expected recovery from knee ligament damage.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho believes it is 'obvious' Liverpool will hurl giant striker Peter Crouch into the match.

The Chelsea boss is without key defender Ricardo Carvalho - although opposite number Rafael Benitez insists he will 'wait to see the team sheet first' before believing that - and Mourinho expects to see Crouch leading the Reds attack.

The England man was left on the bench last week in the first leg, when Chelsea won 1-0, but Liverpool's performance improved considerably when he came on for Craig Bellamy.

The Portuguese coach said: 'Rafa is a good manager. In Peter Crouch he has a player who is two metres tall and Ricardo Carvalho is not playing. I think he is intelligent if he plays the direct game to Crouch, that is normal, obvious.

'Yes, we will miss Carvalho. He has been our best defender, one part of the season without Petr Cech behind him, another without John Terry beside him and another without Michael Essien in front of him.

'He has been the main man, the pillar. So to miss him in such a big game is a big blow. We have other solutions, and do not forget that we are winning and every time we play Liverpool and score before them, we always get the right result.

'We are leading 1-0, those are good conditions to have self-belief that we can win the tie.'

Michael Essien, who will be marking Crouch at Anfield said: 'Peter Crouch is the tallest man I have ever played against, but I am ready.'

'I have never seen a footballer like him - he can beat me in the air but I can beat him to the ball on the ground.

'I do not mind playing in defence, I will do anything the team wants. I will play anywhere I have been asked to play, I have been doing it all season so it is nothing new for me.

'The last time we played against Crouch it was me and Paolo, and it was hard. This time John Terry will be alongside me, and I believe we have learned from what happened last time.'

He added: 'It is good to have John alongside me this time, he has more experience and can teach me. I feel we have learned the lesson from the league game earlier in the season at Anfield.

'It was difficult for me and Paolo to deal with Peter Crouch then, I feel it will be a different story this time.

'I think with John around this time, he will be more powerful in the air and can deal with the difficult aerial stuff we may face.'

ALONSO: OUR FANS GIVE US HUGE BELIEF

  Xabi Alonso believes Liverpool have a big advantage in the second leg of their semi-final against Chelsea in the form of the Anfield crowd.  
The Spanish playmaker claims the roar from the Kop makes the players feel 10-feet tall.
  
"The role our crowd can play is massive and they give us such a big belief in ourselves," Alonso told a packed press conference at Anfield.
  
"Playing at Anfield on a European night is always a special occasion and the crowd give us a real boost and the energy that we need for winning the game.
  
"This is such a massive match. We are 100 per cent focused and have confidence. We made some mistakes in the first game at Stamford Bridge and we were really disappointed with the way we played because we didn't do enough going forward.
  
"We know we have to do better going forward this time and we have to score a goal. It's important not to concede a goal but we have a lot of belief we can score two goals. We beat them in the Premiership 2-0 at Anfield this season, when we scored two goals in the first half and we played very well in that game."
  
The Reds number 14 also rejected claims that Liverpool will start the game as favourites.
  
"Chelsea are 1-0 up from the first leg so they are favourites, not us," added Alonso. "We know what we have to do and we don't need motivation for this game because we are so close to a Champions League final. I think we are a better team than the one in 2005 but we have to show that out on the pitch on Tuesday night."

  Rafael Benitez will tell his players to take inspiration from Liverpool's 2005 Champions League semi-final triumph over Chelsea as they bid for a place in this season's final.  
Chelsea travel to Merseyside defending a one-goal lead from the first leg but Benitez is brimming with optimism and confident the outcome can be the same as it was two years ago when Luis Garcia’s goal sent the Reds to Istanbul.
  
Anfield is expected to be a cauldron of noise yet again for the latest visit of Jose Mourinho's men and the Spaniard believes the fans will have another big part to play.
  
"We didn't play well in the first game, but we lost only 1-0 which means there is not a lot of difference between the teams," he said ahead of the eagerly anticipated second leg tie.
  
"If you can play below your level and only lose by a goal, it means if you raise your level you must have a really good chance.
  
"We can use the memories of two years ago to our advantage because we know what the players and fans can do working together.
  
"I remember before the game in 2005 the Chelsea players spoke a lot about being ready for the Anfield atmosphere, but when the game was played they could not handle it. It's very difficult for any opposing team to prepare to play against 12 men.
  
"The players can also use these positive memories. We will go into the game with a lot of confidence, but we know Chelsea are a very good team and we cannot afford to make mistakes."
  
Despite trailing on aggregate Benitez is of the opinion that the pressure is all on Chelsea and added: "They are a team which has been built with a lot of money to win major trophies.
  
"They spent a lot of money on Shevchenko and Ballack last year because their priority is the Champions League. Now they have more difficulties in the Premiership, it's clear if they're going to win a major trophy this is the one they want to win."
  
Benitez has refused to become embroiled in a war of words with his opposite number but responded to Mourinho's most recent jibes by commenting: "I'm not interested in pinning newspaper articles on the walls of the dressing room.
  
"I'm not the kind of manager who uses this tactic because the players themselves know what to do. If an opponent makes a really big mistake with comments he makes, maybe it's different, but in this case the players have all the motivation they need to give a good performance."

BENITEZ: WE CAN SCORE THREE

  Rafa Benitez believes Liverpool can reach the Champions League final in Athens even if Chelsea score a crucial away goal on Tuesday night.  
The 1-0 scoreline at Stamford Bridge last week means the Reds will have to net three if Chelsea get a goal at Anfield.
  
But Benitez insists he won't panic if this happens – because he knows from experience what his players can do when the chips are down.
  
"For me, it's better if we don't concede. But we know we can score more than one goal. If we need to score three, okay, we have experience against Olympiacos," the Spaniard told an Anfield press conference on Monday.
  
"I know we were not playing at our level last week. That's the key for the second leg. If we play to our level I'm sure we will win."
  
Meanwhile, the Liverpool boss believes the Anfield atmosphere will be a problem for Jose Mourinho's men - despite the experience they have from two years ago.
  
"Our supporters – they are the special ones," said Benitez. "We don't need to talk about our supporters, it's enough just to hear them.
  
"At Stamford Bridge, we won in the stands, that was clear. The other supporters were with their flags, but our supporters were with their hearts. We don't need to give flags. It's easy for us.
  
"Our fans cannot give red cards or award penalties, but they can score goals. I like this about our supporters because we know they will show they are the best in the world again tomorrow night.
  
"I am sure you will see that Anfield is very difficult for Chelsea. They can say they've experienced it before, they can say it's not a problem, but it will be a problem for them.
  
"We are playing against a very good team, but we have confidence, and playing with 12 men is easy!"

KEWELL BACK AS REDS BEAT BLUES

  Harry Kewell made an impressive return from injury when he created a goal during Liverpool Reserves' 3-1 win over Everton in the mini-derby at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground on Monday night.  
The Reds number seven hadn't kicked a ball since scoring for Australia against Croatia in the World Cup and has been on the sidelines all season. He came on after 55 minutes and played on the left wing.
  
Kewell made an instant impact too. He was only on the field for five minutes when he beat two defenders down the left and set up Craig Lindfield for a tap-in from close range.

RIISE: EARLY GOAL WILL SET US UP NICELY

  John Arne Riise has emphasised the need for an early goal at Anfield on Tuesday when Liverpool aim to overturn a one goal deficit in the Champions League semi-final second leg against Chelsea.  
But on what is bound to be a highly-charged night he's also pleading for patience.
  
"We know we're going to have to score and it would help if we can get an early goal," said Riise, a member survivor from the side that dumped the Londoners out of the competition at the same stage in 2005.
  
"We didn't create many chances on Tuesday, but we performed better in the second half and at home we know we can get forward and score goals.
  
"We need a good start. If we get that, with the crowd behind us, it means it could be game on. It's also important to be patient and be careful to give nothing away.
  
"Two years ago it was unbelievable and it can be the same again."
  
Riise thinks Didier Drogba is Chelsea's main danger-man but backed Liverpool's strikers to pose an equal threat at the opposite end.
  
"Drogba is a very good player. He's as strong as a bull, he works hard and he scores goals. It's very difficult to play against him," added the Norwegian.
  
"He didn't have many chances on Wednesday, but played his part in the goal.
  
"But our strikers are capable of producing a similar level of performance if we can create enough chances for them. Usually we always get chances at home and we'll have to put them away.
  
"I don't care if it's strikers, midfielders or defenders, all of us can score goals and we'll work together to do that."

FINNAN HAILS TOP CLASS HYYPIA

  Steve Finnan has heaped praise on teammate Sami Hyypia after the big Finn played his 400th game for Liverpool during the 2-1 defeat at Portsmouth on Saturday.  
The Republic of Ireland international believes Hyypia is one of the best defenders to ever grace the Premiership and added it is a pleasure to play alongside him for Liverpool.
  
"Sami has been mentioning the fact that he was a few games away from 400 games for Liverpool for a few weeks now," joked Finnan.
  
"It's fantastic for him and for a foreign player to come in and play 400 games for a club like Liverpool shows you what a good player he is. He has been a brilliant player for Liverpool and for me he has been one of the best central defenders to have played in the Premiership.
  
"He is a top class defender, he has two very good feet and has scored some very important goals for us. Sami has got it all for a centre half and he has been a great servant to the club. Hopefully he can go on and play a few more games for us."
