NANI SALE `INEVITABLE` - SPORTING

Sporting Lisbon chairman Soares Franco has revealed that the club could not stop Manchester United from signing Portugal international Nani.

The 20-year-old winger joined Porto's Brazilian midfielder Anderson, 19, in a deal that could cost in the region of £30million to the Premiership champions.

According to Sporting supremo Franco, nothing could have been done to prevent the sale negotiated in Portugal by United chief executive David Gill and Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant Carlos Queiroz.

The English giants forked out enough cash to trigger the clause in Nani's contract.

"Manchester United contacted us and said that they wanted to activate the clause - they wanted the player anyway," Franco told a press conference in Lisbon on Thursday.

"Club (Sporting Lisbon) had the obligation to release the player and deal with Manchester United.

"He (Nani) had another two years on his contract with a 20 million euros (£13.5m) release clause. From the end of next season he would have cost half of that price.

"Nani has never been for sale. This is an agreement I have made with club supporters when I took charge.

"But there is a difference between our intention of no sale and the international market circumstances. Manchester United acted on the release clause.

"I felt he wanted to go. Nobody liked to see Nani leaving."

Like United winger Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani arrives from Sporting, a club with a history of producing young talent, and possesses pace and skill similar to that of his countryman.

Franco has always tried to protect his young players from the envious eyes of Europe's top clubs and has vowed not to carry on selling.

"No more players are for sale. We have a dream, which is to create a competitive European team," added Franco, who last Friday tempted another growing Sporting star, Joao Moutinho, to pen a six-year deal in a bid to secure the homegrown talent.

Nani and Anderson will join England international Owen Hargreaves at Old Trafford after the club confirmed on Thursday the Bayern Munich midfielder will join them on July 1 in a £17m deal.
