ANELKA EMERGES AS MANYOO CONTENDER...BUT GILL SAYS MAJOR BUSINESS HAS BEEN DONE (THAT'S DAVID GILL, NOT F365's PETE)
Nicolas Anelka has emerged as a surprise target for ManYoo.
Fresh from signing Owen Hargreaves, Nani and Anderson, the acquisition of a striker is now Sir Alex Ferguson's top priority.
'United have made inquiries as to Anelka's availability at Bolton and it is understood that the 28-year-old striker will be allowed to leave if a club competing in next season's Champions League lodge a bid matching the £8 million that Bolton paid Fenerbahce for the Frenchman last August,' reports The Daily Telegraph.
The Guardian concurs, announcing that Ferguson's 'initial targets had included Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o and Dimitar Berbatov of Tottenham Hotspur, though they have effectively been priced out of his budget following this week's spending.
'Another highly-rated striker, the Ajax forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who scored 23 goals in 34 league appearances in Holland last term, has indicated he would prefer to remain in the Eredivisie for a further season.'
But whilst The Times also talks of Anelka being on ManYoo's list of targets, it also declares 'but it is a long list headed by Eto'o and taking in names such as Dimitar Berbatov (Tottenham Hotspur), Fernando Torres (Atlético Madrid), Klaas Jan Huntelaar (Ajax), Carlos Tévez (West Ham United) and Michael Owen (Newcastle United).'
Intriguingly, following their triple raid this week, chief executive David Gill has indicated that the bulk of the club's 'major' transfer work has now been completed.
"We will see what happens over the next two or three months but by and large that will be the major element of our business," Gill told MUTV.
"If a player comes up that Sir Alex is convinced will make us better, I am sure we will find the funds but that is a major bit of business we have done this week." |
