End of road for Nedved?
Saturday 23 June, 2007
Pavel Nedved has said he’ll make his announcement next week and it’s reported the Juventus hero will hang up his boots.

“If there is no meeting with Juve, then Pavel will certainly retire,” revealed agent Mino Raiola in a warning to the club.

“He is capable of just about anything, but I will do everything I can to encourage him to keep playing.”

The midfielder had already considered retirement last summer after the 2006 World Cup, but opted to stay on to help Juve return to the top flight after their demotion in the Calciopoli scandal.

Now that promotion has been achieved and many new names are being signed for the club – including latest arrivals Tiago Mendes and Sergio Almiron – Nedved could opt to call it a day.

A meeting has been set up with the Bianconeri directors for next week, but issues over the length of his contract and promises of a future job as a director for the club may provide stumbling blocks.

Today’s newspapers in Italy report that Juventus are preparing for a 2007-08 without Nedved by seeking out Hamburg midfield dynamo Rafael Van der Vaart.

The Czech international and 2003 European Player of the Year has confirmed he will make a decision before June 30.

Nedved turns 35 in August and has been at Juventus since 2001, having previously played for Lazio, Sparta Prague and Dukla Prague.

Donati: To Celtic for Europe
Saturday 23 June, 2007
Massimo Donati explains the reason he signed for Celtic was so he could play in the Champions League.

“I am very happy with my choice,” the former Atalanta midfielder told the ‘Gazzetta dello Sport’ after agreeing a £3m move and a four-year contract.

“I have had three very good seasons on a personal level, but despite this I have not been able to win back a place at Milan or a call-up to the Italy squad.”

Donati was bought by the Rossoneri for £10m, but only ever spent one season at the club in 2001-02, the rest played on loan at Parma, Sampdoria, Messina and Atalanta.

“Celtic give me the opportunity to play in the Champions League and that is a very important opportunity for me.”

The 26-year-old was one of the main stars of the successful Under-21 squad, but has never quite lived up to that potential.

Milan had announced he was returning to the San Siro this summer, but then opted to release him.

“A few months ago Milan said they were putting their faith in me. I now hope to make them regret their decision to sell me.”

New seeding system for Champions
Saturday 23 June, 2007
The Champions League and European qualifying for the 2010 World Cup undergo changes, announce UEFA.

From 2007-08 the Champions League will also have a seeding system in the draw for the quarter-finals.

This is to prevent teams who are already qualified from resting their players in the final one or two Group games, as that will affect their standing.

Clubs will receive two points for a win and one for a draw in the seeding system drawn up at the end of the first knock-out round.

UEFA have also confirmed that the qualifying set-up for the 2010 World Cup, set to be staged in South Africa.

The European teams will be split into eight groups of six squads each and one group of five.

The nine winners will qualify directly for the tournament and the eight runners-up go through a two-legged play-off.

All 53 member nations of UEFA will enter for the chance to be one of the 13 European sides in the World Cup finals.

Another UEFA qualifying campaign is still on-going, as Italy are among the outfits aiming for a spot in Euro 2008.

Azerbaijan and Armenia’s record was hit today, as they failed to decide on where to stage their Group B matches on September 8 and 12.

So UEFA have cancelled the fixtures and handed the teams 0 points for the encounters.

They are in Group B along with Poland, Serbia, Portugal, Finland, Belgium and Kazakhstan.

FIGC: Suazo risks six-month ban
Saturday 23 June, 2007
David Suazo risks a six-month ban after signing a contract with Inter before the clubs had reached an agreement, warn the FIGC.

“Both Suazo and Massimo Moratti said that a contract had already been signed,” noted Mario Stagliano, the former Vice-President of the Federation investigative committee.

“If that is the case, then even if it was torn up later, the crime was admitted by both parties and so a punishment is applicable.

“According to the regulations, the player and the President must be suspended or face some form of sanction. The maximum ban is six months.”

The Nerazzurri confirmed that they had penned a personal deal with the striker even though Cagliari had not formally sold him yet.

So when Milan came in and secured a £10m transfer with the Sardinians, they found him already promised to the other side of the San Siro.

This morning the Rossoneri officially pulled out of the agreement with Cagliari because of that personal contract, but the matter could well not be over with yet.
