Cassano calls up Mancini
Saturday 23 June, 2007
Antonio Cassano claims Roberto Mancini is the only Coach who understands him, fuelling rumours he is seeking an Inter switch.
The troubled Italian has made it clear he wants a return to Serie A after a long period on the bench at Real Madrid.
“Mancini has always spoken highly of me and I never had the opportunity to publicly thank him, but this is the right moment,” he told Sky TG24.
“He is now one of the only people who speaks well of Cassano. I think that in terms of character we are similar. Like me, he also made a few mistakes when he was young.”
The fact that these comments come hours after Fabio Capello – who Cassano had always called a Father figure – praised the ex-Bari starlet makes it seem like a snub aimed directly at the Real boss.
In fact, Capello and Mancini have a well-known animosity that has only become more fractious after the Calciopoli scandal.
Inter have been linked with Cassano already this year, although President Massimo Moratti was at pains to point out he was not a primary target.
Now that Milan have released their grip on David Suazo, it is increasingly unlikely that there will be room for the ex-Roma man at San Siro.
“Right now I cannot see Italian teams who could buy him,” noted transfer consultant Ernesto Bronzetti.
“I advise he remains in Madrid. Perhaps a new Coach will arrive who can regenerate him. If Cassano gets back in shape physically and starts thinking like a player of his level, he has everything he needs to be a great first team player for Real.” |
