The Miami HEAT Signs Smush Parker
MIAMI, FL – The Miami HEAT announced today that they have signed free agent guard William "Smush" Parker. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"We are excited to bring Smush to Miami," said HEAT General Manager Randy Pfund. "He's a talented young player who brings good size and athleticism to our point guard position. Smush has been the starting point guard of a playoff team the past two seasons and we believe he has his best years ahead of him."
Parker, who helped guide the Lakers to postseason play in each of his two seasons as the team's starting point guard, has shown his durability as he is the only Laker to appear in all 164 games the past two seasons. After signing as a free agent with Los Angeles on Aug. 2, 2005, he has averaged 11.3 points, 3.2 assists, 2.9 rebounds, 1.58 steals and 31.9 minutes. He shot 44.1 percent from the floor, 36.6 percent from three-point range and 67.0 percent from the foul line with the Lakers. Additionally he joined Gilbert Arenas, Kobe Bryant and Jason Kidd as one of only four players in the NBA to record at least 110 steals and 110 three-point field goals in each of the past two seasons.
In 82 games his past season, Parker averaged 11.1 points, 2.8 assists, 2.5 rebounds, a team-leading 1.45 steals and 30.0 minutes. In addition to leading the Lakers, his 1.45 spg average ranked 15th in the NBA. Parker led the Lakers in steals (119) and starts (80) and ranked second on the team in minutes played (2,457), points (907), field goals made (342) and attempted (785) and three-point field goals made (110) and attempted (301).
During a four-year NBA career with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers, Parker has averaged 9.4 points, 2.9 assists, 2.5 rebounds, 1.27 steals and 26.3 minutes in 246 games (181 starts). The 6'4", 180-pound point guard has shot 43.4 percent from the floor, 35.7 percent from three-point range and 71.0 percent from the foul line.
Parker began his NBA career with the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2002-03 season after signing as an undrafted free agent out of Fordham University. After one season with the Cavs he split the 2003-04 season between Aris of the Greek League and Idaho of the Continental Basketball Association. During the 2004-05 season he had stints with the Florida Flame of the National Basketball Association Development League (the HEAT's affiliate that season), the Detroit Pistons and the Phoenix Suns. |
