RIISE: I WANT TO REMAIN A RED

        John Arne Riise is confident of prolonging his stay at Anfield, despite the fact negotiations over a new contract have not yet begun.
Riise, 26, is one of the club's longest-serving players – having been signed by Gerard Houllier from Monaco during the summer of 2001 – and is about to enter the final two years of his existing contract.

With press speculation linking Liverpool with a host of new players the Norwegian could be forgiven for worrying about his future but he admits he's not too concerned.

"I know the manager would have called at once it if was true that he wanted to offload me," said Riise.

"I have had full confidence at Liverpool for six years, and see no reason to stop playing for the club.

"The plan is that we shall talk about a contract extension before the start of next season."

Liverpool are believed to have joined Newcastle in the race to sign Wigan defender Leighton Baines, as Rafa Benitez seeks a left back.
With John Arne Riise providing the only left-footed option at left-back, with Fabio Aurelio showing he is more comfortable in midfield, Benitez is keen to add another full-back during the close season.
Baines is a top target for Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce, but it appears Liverpool could beat the Magpies to the signing of the England Under 21 international because of problems behind the scenes.
A conflict between Sports Soccer tycoon Mike Ashley, who is set to takeover at St James', and Wigan chairman and JJB Sports founder Dave Whelan looks set to have an impact on where Baines ends up.
Meanwhile, the Reds have snapped up another young European player with Swedish teenager Alexander Kacaniklic moving to Anfield.

Lyon star denies Reds deal is done
Lyon midfielder Florent Malouda has reiterated his desire to leave the club, but insists no agreement has been made for him to join Liverpool.


The 26-year-old has vowed to leave the French champions this summer and Liverpool, as well as Arsenal, have been linked with a potential move.

Speculation this week had suggested that Reds boss Rafa Benitez was set to swoop for the France winger in a £10million deal.

However Malouda, who is currently with the national team at their Clairefontaine base, insists no deal has been done.

"Liverpool have not approached Lyon," said Malouda.

"It's no more advanced than that."

Malouda also revealed he does not mind which league he plays his football in next season.

"It depends on the desire of the club that wants to sign me," he added.

"People criticise the Italian championship, but an Italian club won the Champions League.

"My wish is that an agreement is reached with interested clubs. I would like it to be done differently, but if it carries on it could go on until June 30.

"(Lyon president Jean-Michel) Aulas is a strong negotiator. For me it's just a question of when."
