Turkey striker Tuncay Sanli has been on Teesside today to undergo a medical as Middlesbrough attempt to finalise his signing.
The 25-year-old Fenerbahce frontman agreed terms on a free transfer in Istanbul last week but has had to wait for a visa before flying in to tie up his move.
PA Sport understands Tuncay was at the club's Rockliffe Park training headquarters today and has had his medical, and now all that remains is to complete the administrative side of the deal.
Tuncay has scored 14 goals in 43 full internationals and has 59 to his name in 154 league games for his club over the past five seasons.
His arrival comes a day after Boro confirmed they had signed Arsenal's Jeremie Aliadiere for an initial fee of £2million.
Manager Gareth Southgate has wasted little time in strengthening his frontline after losing Mark Viduka to derby rivals Newcastle, although he has had to remain patient in his quest to land the Turkey international.
Chief executive Keith Lamb travelled to Istanbul last week to thrash out the deal, but the club had to wait until the player had the necessary documentation to travel to England.
He will now need a work permit but that should be a formality as he fulfils the criterion of having played in more than 75% of his country's international games in the last two years.
Tuncay will become Southgate's third summer signing after Jonathan Woodgate and Aliadiere - and he is unlikely to be the last.
Boro are looking for a right-back and a right-sided midfielder, but may also have to recruit a third striker should Portsmouth formalise their interest in Ayegbeni Yakubu.
