BORO striker Yakubu is a wanted man - with Birmingham the latest club to target the Nigerian ace.
Blues manager Steve Bruce is understood to be ready to test Boro’s resolve to hold onto the 24-year-old hitman by launching a £10m bid for a player who has scored 35 goals for Boro in two seasons since his £7.5m switch from Portsmouth.
Already this summer Yak has been linked with a return to Pompey, and with a cross-Pennine switch to moneybags Man City.
Boro supremo Gareth Southgate has stated his desire to hold onto Yakubu, but as the transfer market hots up, the further speculation will unsettle a player who is understood to be considering seeking a move.
Newly-promoted Birmingham switched their attention to Yakubu because they appear to be failing to make any progress in a proposed deal totalling £9m for Tottenham striker Mido and midfielder Hossam Ghaly.
And it is not out of the question that Boro could go for Mido if they do decide to part with Yakubu.
Tall Egyptian striker Mido, also 24, has score 14 Premiership goals in 34 starts for Spurs, who paid £4.5m to snap him up from Roma after a successful loan spell.
But Boro will only allow Yakubu to leave if they can replace him with a prolific scorer. Mido has not played enough Premiership games to be proven, while another potential target, Alan Smith, has not got a good scoring record.
And Man United confirmed today that they had yet to receive a formal offer for Smith, which suggests that any Boro interest remains tentative.
United did reveal that Boro had made an informal inquiry regarding the England international. Smith is with United on a four-match Far East tour and will want his future thrashed out on his return.
At present Birmingham’s interest in Yakubu is an unwanted distraction for Southgate, who is focused on adding players rather than losing them.
He said: “We are delighted with those players we have brought in this summer. All four are top quality - though we are looking to strengthen further.”
And one new face definitely at the Riverside is defender Luke Young, who arrives from Charlton on a four-year deal for a fee of £2.5m.
The 28-year-old former England international was due to be unveiled at a press conference today.
Young joins a defence currently without Jonathan Woodgate, Robert Huth and Matthew Bates through injury.
As revealed in later editions of yesterday’s Gazette, Bates has damaged the cruciate ligament in his left knee and faces months of rehabilitation.
The youngster has already been through the process once, as he did similar damage to the opposite knee when on loan at Ipswich last November.
His latest blow came just 25 minutes into his comeback in Tuesday’s game at Darlington. He could be match fit again by March if everything goes to plan.
