Manchester City are understood to have agreed a deal for Vedran Corluka.
According to reports in Croatia, the 6ft 3in defender is poised to join City from Dinamo Zagreb for a fee in the region of ¿13million (£8.7million).
Corluka, who played for Croatia when they defeated England in a Euro 2008 qualifier, would also need to be granted a work permit before a transfer could be finalised.
Sven Goran Eriksson has been working hard to strengthen his squad since being appointed as City boss and has already brought in four new faces in Martin Petrov, Rolando Bianchi, Gelson Fernandes and Geovanni.
The Swede's efforts to sign a defender were thwarted when Juventus rejected an offer for Giorgio Chiellini, but he has now turned his focus elsewhere.

Manchester City have agreed a £5.7million deal with Fiorentina to sign Bulgaria striker Valeri Bojinov, according to reports in Italy.
Bojinov, 21, has endured a difficult time in Florence since joining from Lecce - with whom he made his Serie A debut at the age of 16 - in 2005 for £10million.
As soon as Luca Toni arrived later that year he struggled for regular first-team football.
He spent last season on loan with Juventus in Serie B but was not offered a full-time contract by the Bianconeri this summer after making only a handful of appearances.
"I hope I never have to come back to Fiorentina again," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport before flying home to Bulgaria with his agent at the weekend. "England would be a perfect solution."

Manchester City are set to complete the signing of Real Sociedad defender Javi Garrido, skysports.com understands.
The 22-year-old is a left sided defender or midfielder and has come through the youth ranks at Anoeta, but he is now set to quit the club.
Garrido has another year left on his current contract, but City have struck a deal believed to be worth £2million.
The likes of Ajax and Athletic Bilbao had shown an interest, but he now seems set for a move to City - who are ready to hand him a four-year contract.
Deal confirmed
Real boss Chris Coleman has confirmed that Garrido is set to seal a move to Eastlands.
"He is a good player, but Manchester City has an interest in him and it is the decision of the player to go to England," he confirmed.
"I have explained to him that I do not want to sell him, but the financial situation is what it is.
"We do not want to lose him but it is his decision. Both clubs have an understanding over money.
"In the end the deal for Garrido, whatever the price, will help us in other areas and we have to be clever." |
