MatchID: 126780572
Arena: The Butchery
Crowd: 17926
Weather conditions were fairly good for football, and The Butchery saw a crowd turnout of 17926. South Africa tactics involved an interesting 3-5-2 combination. Starters: McKillen - Matsangura, Mahabane, Sanyang - Imrie, Valentin, Tefu, Thomas, Singh - Rabutla, McInerney.
Hanguk had chosen a strategic 4-5-1 formation. Lineup: Lee - Baik, Park, Kim, Kang - Seol, Rho, Ryu, Cho, Lee - Mo.
For their match strategy, Hanguk had decided to use their ability to counter-attack whenever possible. Some great play up the middle by South Africa led to a chance for Duma Rabutla to get the go-ahead goal in the 22nd minute, but the shot hit the crossbar. Hanguk seemed to suffer a certain amount of confusion and they fell to a solid level of organization. 39 minutes into the match, the speedy Dexter McInerney easily outpaced Chulsoon Kim to knock in the 1-0 goal. South Africa's Duma Rabutla swung in a good chance from the left, but the visitors' defence were able to clear the ball. The bicycle kick from Brodie Imrie would have been the Goal of the Year for South Africa, had it not hit the post. A great save by keeper Kyo-Moon Lee in the 44th minute kept the visitors in the game after Dale Thomas struck from the left with a real cannonball. Hanguk almost scored after a counterattack in the 45th minute, but Sun-Li Park took a shot from the left that landed harmlessly in the side of the net. Hanguk appeared unsure on how to play and their organization was only weak. 1 - 0 was the halftime score. South Africa, bringing their ball possession to 64 percent, dominated the battle.
The Hanguk players spent the halftime break getting a rerun of the team's tactical organization and regained a solid organization. A magnificent combination in the middle resulted in South Africa's Duma Rabutla putting the lead up to 2 - 0. The home side's Khuliso Sanyang came close to extending the lead in the 53rd minute. His shot came in on the right hand side but Kyo-Moon Lee managed to save it by a fingernail. There was a bit of a mixup on the field as Hanguk found themselves out of position and their organization level dropped to passable. The referee showed Hanguk's Jae-Pyo Cho the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge. Kwame Tefu gave South Africa supporters even more to cheer about when he increased the lead to 3 - 0 after 74 minutes, following a good exchange of passes on the right that the away team failed to deal with. At this point in the game, defending their lead became the main priority for South Africa. South Africa, bringing their ball possession to 60 percent, dominated the battle.
Tim McKillen performed admirably for South Africa. Carroll Valentin turned in a dismal performance, however. The most dominating Hanguk player was without a doubt Kyo-Moon Lee. However, Sun-Li Park made a disastrous appearance. The match ends 3 - 0.
