Lazio may face disciplinary action when UEFA investigate crowd trouble
during the Biancocelesti’s Champions League draw with Dinamo Bucharest on
Tuesday night.
The tense 1-1 draw was overshadowed by reports of racist chants from some
sections of the home support and clashes between fans which led to five
Romanians being injured.
“We are waiting for referee and observer reports before we decide whether
to launch disciplinary proceedings,” a UEFA spokesman stated.
“Violence outside the ground unfortunately is a matter for police in Italy,
but we had concerns about racism before the game and we take a no tolerance
approach to that.”
The capital club have every right to be apprehensive given that earlier this
month UEFA revealed that racism or violence could result in a club’s
suspension from European competition.
Hopes for leniency are hindered by the fact that Lazio supporters groups
have a poor repuatation after the Aquile were forced to play behind closed
doors during the 2004 UEFA Cup.
“There is no doubt that there is a violent history surrounding Lazio fans
and we always seem to have problems,” the spokesman concluded ominously.
The return leg against Dinamo Bucharest is scheduled for August 28 at the
Red Dogs’ Dinamo Stadium and promises to be a tense affair.
