2008-2009年度, 英甲球隊列斯再次挑戰升班失敗
以第4名資格進入升班附加賽的列斯, 4強面對米禾爾
作客0-1敗陣, 主場被逼和1-1, 總比數1-2被淘汰出局
Leeds United manager Simon Grayson named an unchanged side for the visit of Millwall as his side looked to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit in the semi-final of the League One Play-Offs.
Elland Road was packed to the rafters for the clash with over 36,000 home fans substantially outnumbered the 860 Millwall fans who had made the trip north.
And the clash got off to a fiery start with Adam Bolder earning himself a booking for a crunching challenge on Robert Snodgrass. Jonny Howson also crunched Jimmy Abdou as both sides signalled their intentions.
Bradley Johnson after the Millwall game
The game had a frenetic opening and Leeds put Millwall under plenty of early pressure, forcing the Lions onto the back foot in numbers.
Snodgrass had the first shot on goal inside the opening 20 minutes, when he tested David Forde with a low drive after some great passing play, involving Howson.
Forde was called into action again to save, firstly, from Beckford and then from Fabian Delph.hey hey
Delph was soon booked after an incident with Gary Alexander, and, just as with the first leg, tensions were clearly high.
On 36 minutes, Grayson was forced into making a change, Neil Kilkenny coming off with injury to be replaced by Andy Robinson.
Leeds had enjoyed the better of the opening period, but Gary Alexander tried his luck for Millwall with a shot from distance that flew over the bar.
But it was United who ended the first half in the ascendancy by putting Millwall under yet more pressure. Another Bolder foul resulted in Snodgrass winning a corner after his free-kick was cleared.
And in the final minute of the half, Robinson curled a free-kick over the bar. Leeds also threatened first in the second period with another Robinson free-kick causing problems.
As Leeds returned the ball into the Millwall box, referee Mark Halsey awarded a penalty for a foul on Sam Sodje, who was wrestled to the floor, giving United the chance to level matters.
But leading goalscorer Beckford's spot-kick was well-saved by Forde before Robinson followed up with a shot over the bar from the tightest of angles.
United were on level terms within moments, though, courtesy of Luciano Becchio. Ben Parker supplied a low cross from the left and Becchio slid the ball home from close range to make it 1-0 on the night and 1-1 on aggregate.
Millwall suffered a further blow on the hour-mark when, as Forde came to punch a ball clear, Millwall defender Zak Whitbread was felled by his goalkeeper's knee with what appeared to be a serious injury. But after a lengthy stoppage, Whitbread was amazingly fit enough to return to the action.
Following the goal it was all Leeds in terms of possession, but when Beckford latched onto a good ball over the top, he was unable to get in a shot on goal.
And on 74 minutes, Millwall struck a killer blow when Jimmy Abdou stabbed the ball home from close range after a David Martin cross. It was the visitors first goal threat of the half and was to prove a killer blow.
Leeds mounted one final push to save the season, and Millwall introduced another central defender to repel the tide during the closing stages, but the visitors were defending well to snub United out.
With two minutes remaining, Bradley Johnson came within a whisker of snatching the goal Leeds craved but his shot was wide of the mark.
Six minutes of stoppage time gave added hope, but Leeds were unable find a way through, and it was Millwall who were celebrating a place at Wembley while United were contemplating a third successive season in League One.
