Zlatan: Forget Ballon d’Or
Wednesday 3 October, 2007
Inter ace Zlatan Ibrahimovic ended his Champions League goal drought with a brace against PSV last night, but isn’t interested in personal glory.
After a dynamite start to the Serie A season with seven strikes putting him top of the Capocannoniere chart, many believe that Zlatan is favourite for the Ballon d’Or award for the best European footballer of the year.
However, after proving the difference for the Nerazzurri in their 2-0 win last night, the ex-Ajax goal machine stressed that he is a team player.
“Personally I don’t think that it was crucial for me to break my duck in Europe,” he told reporters.
“In this case I think it was much more important that Inter won. I’m not interested in the Ballon d’Or either – I’m just thinking about Inter.”
PSV boss Ronald Koeman was full of praise for the 26-year-old, who he believed took the game out of his side’s reach.
“Zlatan is a class above,” he admitted. “The second goal showed fantastic intuition and unfortunately prevented us getting back into the game.”
Roberto Mancini may opt to rest Ibra for Saturday’s Serie A fixture against Napoli at the San Siro as the giant hitman is likely to feature in Sweden’s games against Liechtenstein and Northern Ireland.
