JOEY Barton bagged his first competitive Magpies goal and came through 65 minutes of his latest comeback match as Newcastle United's second-string ran-out impressive 3-1 victors over Wigan.

The 25-year-old is yet to make his senior bow for the black and whites but, having come through this latest game unscathed, could do so when Spurs come to Tyneside in two weeks time.

And it was Barton who broke the deadlock after 19 minutes as Wigan failed to clear Godsmark's right-wing centre allowing the midfield star to volley home from close range.

The former Man City man had earlier gone close with a far post strike from Pattison's flag-kick which whistled over Mike Pollitt's crossbar.

Wigan chased an equaliser and striker Chris McCaughtrie rattled the hosts' woodwork with a bullet header from Peter Moore's deep delivery.

Lee Clark's side doubled their advantage through Frank Wiafe Danquah just after the half hour, the Dutch striker converting from close range after Mark Doninger got away down the left before squaring for his team-mate.

And the Geordies put the game out of sight three minutes before the break, Matty Pattison's left-footed strike from the edge of the area deflecting off full-back Moore and past a despairing Pollitt.

Toon stopper Forster, so impressive this season, had to make his first save of the evening just seconds after the restart for the second period as he denied Matthew Hampson with the Latics winger clean through on goal.

McCaughtrie (83) then atoned for his earlier headed miss as he surged into the United penalty area before firing low past Forster to pull one back for the visitors.

Barton eyes a Spurs comeback

JOEY BARTON will go all out during the international break to be fit to face Tottenham on October 22.

Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce is ready to pitch his £5.8 million midfielder into numerous full-scale practice matches in the next fortnight.

And it is aimed at Barton – sidelined since the end of July with a broken metatarsal – being ready to play some part against Spurs.

The 25-year-old (pictured) had been widely predicted to remain out of action until next month.

But, as revealed by the Sunday Sun three weeks ago, Tottenham is the target for his full Newcastle debut.

“We will try to fit in as many games as possible for Joey in the next two weeks while the international break is on,” revealed Allardyce.

“We have 14 players away on duty and we will play the young lads with Joey to play games. There is a reserve game and then we will play as many behind-closed-doors games as we can.

“We will give him match fitness. Once he catches up with that we will assess what he’s like before we pick the squad for Spurs.

“If we feel he has shown good progress in the games he has played, the earliest might be an inclusion in the squad against Tottenham.”

MAGPIES midfielder Joey Barton has came through his first full 90 minutes since breaking a bone in his foot during pre-season.

The 25-year-old was part of a Newcastle United XI which was beaten 3-1 by Glasgow Rangers in a behind-closed-doors practice match at St.James' Park on Wednesday afternoon.

Barton has played twice for United's second-string in the past eight days as he continues to build fitness and edge closer his Toon debut with the home game against Spurs on October 22 now a realistic target for the £5.8m summer signing.
