Allardyce has had to curb Barton’s enthusiasm as he pushed for rapid inclusion in his first team plans, but the midfielder played for 90 minutes in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Glasgow Rangers this week and is expected to complete another private reserve game before Tottenham arrive at St James’s Park on October 22. And his manager is delighted with the progress he has made in training as he praised the player’s application since he arrived on Tyneside.
He said: “Joey played for 90 minutes this week and that’s great news. He’ll get another game in next week and hopefully another 90 minutes and then we’ll see about the Tottenham game. That’s a realistic target for him now.
“We’ll monitor his fitness levels and see how much he has improved in the days since the Everton game, but he’s got a good chance of playing against Tottenham. I doubt he’ll be ready to start the game, but we’re looking to put him in the squad.”
