Notebook: Francis to have season-ending surgery

HOUSTON -- Rockets guard Steve Francis will undergo season-ending surgery on a torn quadriceps tendon in his right knee.
Francis, who had been sidelined since Dec. 19, is scheduled to have the surgery on Feb. 25.
The guard had been rehabilitating his knee since being forced onto the inactive list, but the pain in his knee didn't go away. Francis and the team's medical staff opted for another MRI on the knee, revealing the tendon damage.
The surgery will end what was supposed to be Francis' homecoming season. Returning to a city where he was a four-time All-Star, Francis was hoping to provide a scoring boost to Houston's backcourt. He instead played in 10 games, averaging 5.5 points, 3.0 assists and 2.3 rebounds.
Francis said he is hoping to return next season.
“It is obviously disappointing to have my season cut short by this injury,” said Francis. “The opportunity to come back and help the Rockets compete for a championship this season was very special to me. Unfortunately, I’ve been dealing with this injury for the better part of three seasons going back to my days in New York. I am glad to know that we have identified the source of the problem and I’m looking forward to getting the operation over with so that I can start my rehab and prepare for next season.”
