Ferdinand injury doubt for Champions League tie
LONDON, April 7 (Reuters) - Manchester United's England defender Rio Ferdinand faces a battle to be fit for Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final, second leg at home to Roma.
Alex Ferguson was hoping his England centre back had not suffered a serious injury after being forced off in the second half of Sunday's 2-2 Premier League draw at Middlesbrough.
With Nemanja Vidic already sidelined for at least two weeks, the last thing United need is an injury to Ferdinand who limped away with 20 minutes left at the Riverside Stadium.
'We got a few bumps and bruises, but we'll assess things on Monday,' Ferguson told MUTV.
'Hopefully Rio's injury is not serious. He was limping for quite a while and the danger with carrying on with him was we weren't going to get a full performance level from him.'
Gerard Pique replaced Ferdinand and five minutes later Wayne Rooney salvaged a 2-2 draw which leaves United three points clear of Chelsea at the top with five games left.
Ferdinand left the ground with his left foot in a protective cast after apparently getting injured trying to block the second of two goals by Boro's Brazilian striker Afonso Alves.
Monday's Guardian newspaper quoted United sources as saying Ferdinand had 'no chance' of being fit to face Roma at Old Trafford, where the English champions defend a 2-0 lead from the first leg in Rome, and is doubtful for Sunday's visit of third-placed Arsenal.
Ferdinand's partnership with Vidic at the heart of the defence has played a big part in United's assault on Premier League and Champions League honours this season.
