Ferdinand signs new deal
Rio Ferdinand has signed a new five-year deal that will keep him at Old Trafford until he is almost 35, in which time he foresees plenty of success ahead.

The centre-half has reached the zenith of his career, with performances that have been consistently outstanding throughout the season.

Ferdinand, who joined the Reds in summer 2002 from Leeds United, is excited about the future ahead.

“This is a fantastic club and I'm delighted to sign a new contract," he said on Thursday.

"It's a great honour to be part of this trophy-winning team and to share in the success, which I am sure, will continue for many seasons to come. I'd like to thank the manager, the coaching staff, the players and the fans for the tremendous support they have given me since I joined the club."

Sir Alex Ferguson was clearly delighted to safeguard the future of one of his most important players.

"Rio’s contribution this season has been a major factor in our outstanding defensive performance," said the Reds boss, who intimated that the 29-year-old is a future regular captain in the making.

"He has matured into his role at the club and has shown, when needed, what a great captain and leader he can be. I am delighted Rio has signed a new contract."

Adebayor said: "There is not a player who could say no to Barcelona. I don't know if it will happen now, in two years or 10, but I would love to play there.

Having already lost Mathieu Flamini to AC Milan on a free transfer and with Alexander Hleb's Arsenal future looking very uncertain, manager Arsene Wenger faces the prospect of losing another key player, one who scored 24 goals in the Barclays Premier League this season.

Adebayor added: "If Barcelona make an offer for me and reach an agreement with Arsenal, I would be delighted to go and play there."

The striker's former team-mate, Lassana Diarra, said his lack of empathy with Wenger was partly responsible for moving on from Arsenal.

Diarra, set to line up for Portsmouth in Saturday's FA Cup Final against Cardiff, was frustrated by the lack of first-team chances at Arsenal and also his previous club Chelsea, but Jose Mourinho ranks higher in his affections than Wenger.

"I was very young when Chelsea came to speak to me," said Diarra.

"When I was there he (Mourinho) spoke with me, not like my dad, but he explained everything to me.

"This is why, when I am doing so well, I think back to some of the words he said to me two or three years ago.

"Wenger is Wenger and Mourinho is Mourinho — they are not alike. I respect Arsene and Jose but I know which one I prefer."

Villa release Sorensen and Berger  

Aston Villa have confirmed they will not be renewing the contracts of Thomas Sorensen and Patrik Berger, freeing both players to find new clubs.

Dane Sorensen was signed by David O'Leary from Sunderland in 2003 while Berger's three-year stay at Villa Park has been blighted by injuries.

Berger also upset boss Martin O'Neill when he said star midfielder Gareth Barry should join Liverpool.

Sorensen did not feature this season following the arrival of Scott Carson.

Everton released list climbs up to 12

Everton boss David Moyes has brought his list of players released by the club to a dozen.


Following the decisions last week not to extend Thomas Gravesen's loan spell with goalkeeper Stefan Wessels given a free transfer, another batch of players will now leave Goodison Park.


Defender Anthony Gardner, who has not played a first-team match since his January loan from Spurs, will return to the north London club.

Also departing is Icelandic youngster Bjarni Vidarsson, who has spent the last five months on loan to FC Twente in Holland. He made one first-team appearance this season in the UEFA Cup tie against AZ Alkmaar.

Also released is defender Patrick Boyle, who has been on loan at Crewe.

A group of youngsters have also not been offered new terms. They are Shaun Densmore, Steven Morrison, James Hall, Ryan Harpur, Aidan Downes, Stephen Connor and James Jones.

Reserve player of the year John Irving has been offered a new deal, along with Irish defender Darren Dennehy.

Meanwhile, Leighton Baines has become the latest Everton player to undergo surgery to overcome a persistent injury. The defender has struggled all season with groin, hamstring and ankle problems.

Now he has had an ankle operation and is expected to have fully recovered in time for pre-season training in July.

Midfielders Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta are also recovering from surgery, while Joleon Lescott will have a serious of injections over the summer to correct a knee problem.
