Parma’s Azzurrini midfield star Luca Cigarini has signed for Atalanta in a co-ownership deal.

The 22-year-old talent was expected to leave Parma after the Ducali’s relegation to Serie B, but had insisted that he would be happy to stay at the Stadio Tardini.

After a link with Juventus fizzled out, Parma agreed a deal with the Orobici to sell 50 per cent of Cigarini’s rights for an undisclosed fee believed to be around £4m.

The new man has signed a four-year contract with La Dea and will spent the coming season in Bergamo.

Atalanta’s directors are hoping that this signature will appease their fans, who were aggrieved at the decision to snap up unpopular free agent Christian Vieri.

Cigarini will be on show at this summer's Olympic Games.
