Platini to stop Prem poaching teens Sunday 13 July, 2008

UEFA President Michel Platini proposes a ban on transferring players under 18 to stop clubs poaching Serie A starlets.
Italian clubs have made their displeasure very clear at losing youth products to Premier League sides, such as Giuseppe Rossi, Arturo Lupoli and earlier this summer Roma talent Davide Petrucci.
"Clubs have a duty to invest in the local training of players," said an official document drawn up by European Federations representing football, rugby union, handball, basketball, ice hockey and volleyball.
"They are not merely businesses. Concrete proposals must be developed (to prevent) the trafficking or exploitation of young players. Otherwise the risk is that more and more young players move abroad too early in their life."
Italian rules differ from England, so they cannot legally place a player under a professional contract before they turn 18.
This allows overseas clubs to snap up the youngsters essentially free of charge with head-turning offers.
"It will stop Premier League clubs - and those in other major leagues - poaching players from academies willy-nilly," added UEFA spokesman William Gaillard.
An unnamed senior UEFA official all but named Manchester United's swoop for Petrucci, mentioning the fact they managed to steer the teen to England by offering his father a gardening job.
"At the moment, all you have is a free-for-all with agents hanging around outside academies across Europe, all in the name of free movement. It's a jungle and needs to be regulated properly,” the official was quoted as saying in The Telegraph.
"Some of these players are no more than children yet to get round the rules, agents say they want to move them abroad to learn the language, or invent jobs for their parents." |
