Ben Gordon: Won’t Sign Qualifying Offer

Update: Gordon said he wouldn’t sign the Bulls’ one-year qualifying offer of $6.4 million, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Recommendation: “I’m definitely not taking it,” Gordon said Friday night at a charity function in New York. “I’ve already expressed that to them. I mean, that’s not an option.” Gordon is a restricted free agent, who has limited options. He can either sit out the season or sign in Europe. Or Bulls general manager John Paxson could explore a sign-and-trade rather than deal with an unhappy player. Gordon would like a contract extension worth about $72 million, but the most Chicago can offer without incurring a luxury tax is a six-year, $58 million deal.

Big D welcomes back George with new contract

Devean George's stay in Big D is going to last longer than anyone imagined.

George and the Dallas Mavericks have reached an agreement on a new two-year contract worth about $4 million, according to his representative.

Agent Mark Bartelstein told ESPN.com on Wednesday that the deal soon will be made official and includes a player option for George to return to free agency after the coming season.

George, 30, appeared to have little future in Dallas beyond last season after his controversial refusal in February to be included in the Mavericks' trade with the New Jersey Nets for Jason Kidd.

Kobe Bryant has the NBA's only active no-trade clause, but George was able to prevent his inclusion in the deal on Feb. 13 by citing a little-known league rule applicable to a handful of players on one-year contracts. In a game that same night, George missed all 11 of his field-goal attempts in a home loss to Portland and was roundly booed by fans in Dallas.

The Mavericks and Nets completed a reworked trade without George days later, but the second version of the deal cost Mavs owner Mark Cuban more than $11 million extra last season alone in additional payroll and luxury-tax obligations. Fan discontent with George, though, faded quickly, as did any friction within the organization.

New coach Rick Carlisle was eager for the Mavericks to retain George, who spent the last two seasons in Dallas and is regarded as a perimeter threat and versatile defender off the bench when healthy after winning a ring with the Los Angeles Lakers in each of his first three pro seasons.

Injuries limited George to 53 games last season and averages of 3.7 points and 2.6 rebounds in 15.5 minutes per game.

New BDL Photoshop contest: Eddy Curry, Olympic gymnast

Yesterday, I was told to check out Eddy Curry's Wikipedia page, which claimed the Knicks center had aspired to be a gymnast. I didn't really believe it at the time. I just figured some prankster was poking fun at Curry's 300-pound expense.

Well, apparently it's true! And we have sources to back it up.

The first, via A Stern Warning, this October 2005 article by Scoop Jackson at ESPN: "Eddy Curry is a 22-year-old individual. Since he was 11, he knew what he was going to do for the rest of his life. He was into gymnastics, but when is the last time you saw a 7-foot black male gymnast in the Olympics?"

The second, via some character named Shoals, this CNN SI write-up on a Bearcats page from 2001: "When Eddy Curry was in junior high school, his idol of choice wasn't Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Hakeem Olajuwon. It was Dominique Dawes, the Olympic gymnast. "She was real cool," Curry says. "I thought she looked good, too." [...] In an age when every 7-footer dreams of being a point guard, Curry, who can still complete a backflip, is a genuine throwback who doesn't mind throwing his weight around."

Yes, emphasis added. Eddy Curry could do a freakin' backflip. My brain just stopped working.

But while we patiently wait for that long lost clip of Eddy tumbling in tights to appear, let's take this news and spin it into an official BDL Photoshop contest ... Eddy Curry as an Olympic gymnast.
