Three And Easy For England
Trinidad & Tobago 0-3 England
England comprehensively defeated Trinidad and Tobago in Port of Spain thanks to two goals from Jermain Defoe.
England out-classed their Caribbean opponents in the early stages and took the lead through a Gareth Barry volley within fifteen minutes. Defoe added a second for the Three Lions just three minutes with a cool finish when sent clear through on goal.
England made changes at the break but their rhythm was not disrupted as Defoe scored his second goal just five minutes after the interval after good work from substitute David Bentley, before seeing the game out comfortably for an easy victory.
First Half
David Beckham captained an England side mixed with youth and experience. Senior players such as Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard were retained from Wednesday’s victory against USA, while Dean Ashton was handed his England debut.
The home side started with five England-based players including Sunderland’s winger Carlos Edwards.
It took just twelve minutes for England to open their account. Stewart Downing and Wayne Bridge linked up well down the left as a Downing through-ball sent Bridge into space at the by-line. The Chelsea full-back then cut the ball back into the box for the onrushing Barry to volley home his first international goal from close-range.
Three minutes later it was two for England. Afforded a huge amount of space again, Downing surged forward from inside his own half and threaded the ball through for Defoe who found himself completely clear of the Trinidad and Tobago defence. Initially Defoe’s first touch was poor but the Portsmouth man soon regained his composure and slotted the ball across Clayton Ince and into the far corner.
Defoe threatened again on twenty-five minutes with a long-range strike that was comfortably held by Ince.
After being shell-shocked by the opening period of the game, the Soca Warriors began to have an influence on proceedings as Edwards had a free-kick deflected narrowly over the bar, while substitute Daryl Roberts had a shot held by James.
At half-time Trinidad and Tobago could be content that they were edging back into the game, but it looked very unlikely that England’s control of the game would be interrupted, and the prospect of more goals for the visitors in the second half seemed strong.
Second Half
England made four substitutions at half time, with Joe Hart and Phil Jagielka amongst the players brought on, both earning their first caps. Trinidad and Tobago made two changes of their own.
And within five minutes two England substitutes combined to create England’s third and Defoe’s second goal. Bentley beat his man on the right of midfield and crossed to Peter Crouch who headed back across the face of goal to provide Defoe with a simple finish.
A fourth almost followed moments later after great link-up play between Gerrard and Crouch resulted in the forward being denied by strong save by Ince in goals.
The Soca Warriors had their best spell of the second half with twenty minutes remaining, putting pressure on goalkeeper Hart with a sustained period of pressure through corners and long-throws into the box, but England held firm.
The final period of the game fizzled out without major incident, although Blackburn Rovers’ Stephen Warnock was handed a debut of his own, the fourth English debutant of the evening.
Theo Walcott squandered a good chance in the closing stages, while Ashley Young also tested Ince from distance as the visitors saw the game out comfortably to hand Fabio Capello his third win in four matches in charge.
England will now drop out of the spotlight until facing Czech Republic in August and will surely sit back watching this summer’s Euro 2008 tournament pondering what might have been.

England
James: 5 - Terrible judgement saw him injure Kenwyne Jones early on, and though he was largely untested, he did not look the best goalkeeper England or even the Premier League has to offer - despite having had an outstanding season.
Johnson: 6.5 - Fairly unassuming and not as attacking as he prefers to be, but he did a good job of keeping things quiet as and when the hosts looked to attack.
Ferdinand: 6 - Could perhaps be blamed in part for the miscommunication with James that led to Jones' injury (though it was largely the keeper's fault). Was otherwise fairly solid for all intents and purposes, but very much untested.
Woodgate: 6.5 - Was a little busier than his defensive partner, if only slightly, and to his credit, he rose to the challenge and looked a composed as ever. Whether that will be enough to ever displace John Terry - for whom he was standing in - is another matter entirely.
Bridge: 7 - Made a great run and cut-back for the opening goal and patrolled his flank well.
Beckham: 7 - As usual, produced pin-point passes for fun, only to see many of them squandered by a mis-firing front-line (despite the three goals bagged in the end).
Gerrard: 5 - Despite constantly pleading for a central midfield berth, once handed to him against the most genorous of opposition, he failed to dominate the game in any fashion, or impose himself as an attacking threat as he did on the left midweek against the United States.
Barry: 8 - England's Man of the Match. Solid in midfield, made an important run into the box to hammer home the first goal, which was vital. Played well from box to box, despite the under performance of the usually dynamic Gerrard alongside him.
Downing: 6.5 - Played some good passes - notably, the one for Bridge, which assisted Barry. However, he ultimately lacked the precision crosses of Beckham or the pace of players such as Young and Jose Cole and is unlikely to sustain his place in the side on the back of this showing.
Defoe: 7 - He scored twice, but he really wasn't that good. His first goal saw him take two or three bad touches, before scuffing a shot that found its way to the far corner and his second was a tap-in. Could and should have had more. Can be a great goal-scorer on his day, and no doubt his goals today will earn him another chance to pull the shirt on again and put in a more solid performance, of which he is definitely capable.
Ashton: 5 - Did not stake his claim to be England's answer to Luca Toni this evening. Severely lacking a large physical presence up front, on paper, Dean Ashton seems to be the answer to England's problems. The West Ham United man is fairly prolific, powerful and a hard worker. However, injury has greatly affected his ability to develop, and he has yet to replicate his best form in an England shirt. It is now a matter of how much patience Fabio Capello is willing to show.

Terry And Gerrard Ease England To Victory
England 2-0 United States
England comfortably beat the United States with goals from captain John Terry and Steven Gerrard, labouring for the opening half-hour, which was fairly tepid, but asserting themselves well after going ahead on 38 minutes and playing some good football in the second-half.
Plus-points for England coach Fabio Capello were Gerrard's play on the left of midfield, David Beckham's dead-ball deliveries and, when he came on, Gareth Barry's performance.
The game got under way following a presentation to Beckham to mark his 100 appearances for England, Portsmouth's Jermain Defoe being a surprise selection in Capello's starting line-up having not started since the European Championship qualifying win in FYR Macedonia nearly two years ago.
He was preferred to West Ham's Dean Ashton, while Steven Gerrard started on the left-hand side of midfield, with Frank Lampard playing for Capello for the first time after missing the games against Switzerland and France through injury.
Capello had said in his programme notes that England had been guilty of giving the ball away too cheaply in the past and needed to show more patience, keeping the ball when there was no easy option to release it rather than hit a hopeful pass.
However, there were signs of the old failing early on as the game remained flat and lacking much spark. Wayne Rooney twice nearly got Defoe away but his final ball was intercepted.
When Gerrard was bundled to the ground by Ricardo Clark for an England free-kick on the left, Beckham's delivery was put into the net by Gerrard, but the referee ruled it out, wanting the set-piece to be taken again. The second effort hit flat and low deceived everyone as it flew dangerously past the far post.
At the other end, Johnson and Wolff were getting little change from Terry and Ferdinand, but neither goalkeeper was much troubled in the opening half an hour.
Rooney broke down the right and crossed low as Defoe's run took a defender away, but the pass was just behind Gerrard. Then Beckham, the dead-ball expert, touched a free-kick to Gerrard whose fierce drive was headed clear by Dempsey.
Both sides were cancelling each other out by deploying similar formations and depriving the game of rhythm, but the breakthrough came on 38 minutes from another set-piece. Beckham's free-kick was headed into the bottom right-hand corner of Tim Howard's goal by Terry from just inside the USA area. It was a great finish by the England skipper, who needed a booost after the Champions League final.
The second half got underway with Capello having sent on David Bentley for Beckham, and USA coach Bob Bradley making two changes, Brad Guzan and Frankie Hejduk taking the places of Howard and Cherundolo.
England were looking a lot more lively and purposeful after their goal, and Defoe's drive from 25 yards was saved by Guzan before the Pompey striker controlled Terry's lofted ball into the area and hit a half-volley straight at Guzan.
Capello made a double change on 58 minutes with Gareth Barry and Glen Johnson replacing Lampard and Brown, and a minute later his side were two up. Gerrard ran onto Barry's excellent through ball and beat Guzan with a neat finish into the bottom right-hand corner, a fitting finish to a fine England move.
Four minutes later, Guzan did well to gather Bentley's cross from the right at Rooney's feet as England tightened their grip on the match.
Dempsey's effort from 35 yards flew well over the top of the England bar, before Bradley made a double change, Freddy Adu and Eddie Lewis replacing Beasley and Wolff. Capello responded by putting Peter Crouch on in place of Defoe.
With England firmly in control the pace of the game dropped considerably, though Clark's shot from the edge of the England area was blocked by Terry and Barry was caught offside as he tried to work a one-two with Crouch.
Rooney was booked for trying to stop USA from taking a quick free-kick, and was soon replaced by Joe Cole as Maurice Edu came on for Clark. England's final change of the night saw Wayne Bridge take the place of club-mate Ashley Cole.
The game reached its conclusion with England playing some neat football against an American side that offered little offensive threat.
